Like anything it really depends on what you are playing.  For Incursion & Combat Patrol level play the sorcerers can really shine, especially if your opponent has skipped out on any psychic support of their own.

Shortly after our codex dropped I ran an Incursion army as The Wretched with a Plaguecaster Warlord and Typhus.  It crushed my opponents space marines, and may have been my most decisive victory in 9th.  His army had no psychic support and that definitely played into my success. The Plaguecaster Warlord with both Sevenfold Blessing and the Deamons Favor proved to be both a Reliable Caster and a MW Machine.  However he is squishy, which is an odd thing to say for Death Guard, but with the nerf to DR and no Invul he is rather easy to kill and is better suited to a buffing/defensive roll and needs to be protected.  Having Typhus helped as he was my offensive caster.  It was a potent 1-2 punch, and gave me access to 5 of our best spells.

Unfortunately outside of The Wretched we really don't have much that supports psychic heavy armies, and while Sevenfold Blessing is amazing, it only buffs 1 unit.  The Putrid Periapt relic is nice but I'm still aggravated at the huge nerf it received from WotS.  (In War of the Spider you could heal Every psychic phase as opposed to once per game as it is now).  IMO The Wretched also have a lame Contagion which doesn't really benefit the way they play.

If you are playing competitively, our magic is easy to shut down or kill which makes playing into it challenging.  Plus, I find that in competitive games I always need Gloaming Bloat to shut off re-rolls.  But in a casual game at your local store or with friends I think The Wretched definitely has play and in my experience proved quite fun.
