Hi,

I figured I should make a new topic here instead of continuing discussing army lists in the general category. As explained http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/369320-space-skavens/?do=findComment&comment=5683000, my current chaos daemons list is a mono Nurgle one with 30 plaguebearers, supported by a daemon prince with wings and a scrivener, a soul grinder and 2x5 nurglings plus 1x beast. It worked fine against necrons, which weren't able to overpower it, but I was recently mostly tabled by my opponent's turn 2 (they started) and I'm looking at ways to make the list more competitive.

Here's my current improved list (patrol):

1x Lord of Change: Incorporeal form, soul-eater stave, lord of flux...

20x bloodletters (1CP banner)

5x nurglings

20x plaguebearers (1CP banner)

1x beast of nurgle

1x soul grinder (nurgle)

The idea is that contrary to the DPwW, the LoC will be targettable from the start (no lookout sir) and will also generate more aggro than the former. It'll try to pull as much aggro as possible to let the objective holders in peace.

The nurglings, plaguebearers and soul grinder should mostly be objective holders.

The bloodletters bomb will disrupt whatever it needs to. The beast will likely stay in the warp until there's a reason to drop it somewhere.

For secondary objectives, I'm thinking of:

- Scenario specific.

- Stranglehold.

- To the last, if going against a ~soft army (ex.: Not Drukhari).

- Assassination..?

I think this is where the list is lacking the most; secondaries. I would like to split the plaguebearers into 2x10 to help score Octarius Data, perhaps adding a unit of furies, but I would need to get a battalion and a second HQ. Do you think I should:

a. Get a battalion, add a bilepiper for the 2 dices moral on the plaguebearers, split the plaguebearers into 2, get rid of the soul grinder, add furies to score Octarius Data reliably?

b. Something else?

Thanks.

So there's lot's of ways to answer this. I think that lists should have a flavour and shouldn't sacrifice that for optimisation.

That said this is what I believe the problems are.

20x Plague bearers  - In 8th this was top notch (well 30 would be) but in 9th there's no reason for this to be here they just don't do their job that well anymore.

Soul Grinder - While these have got much cheaper and I agree you do need a backfield, they just aren't really worth their points

1x Beast of Nurgle - Ok these are good but even in 1k, 1 isn't going to cut it. It just doesn't have the threat to worry your opponent.

5x Nurglings - Good but 2 squads of 3 can hold twice as many objectives.

Lord of change, without the impossible robe - are you stark raving mad sir? :woot:

Here are some things to think about.

If you have the models replace the Plague bearers with Pink Horrors or even better daemonetts with an instrument - squads of 10. They won't be able to take on a deathstar but they can take on weaker squads and claim/camp mid-field objectives

Take 2 squads of 3 nurglings for the reasons i've already covered

The Soul  grinder can be replaced with 1 or 1 and a bit skull cannons. Other options are Pink Horrors or Brimstone horrors for your backfield

Take at least 3 beats of nurgle or none at all.

Impossible robe for the LoC

Consider rolling for LoC traits, the only one that's bad, or can be bad is spell thief (if your opponent has no psychics) so better to have two than one.

For Secondaries consider,

Engage on all fronts -   which if you take 2 squads of nurglings you can start scoring on turn one - but not in the mission that doesn't allow infiltrators

Raise the banners high - but only if you've taken lots of infantry squads such as daemonetts which are fast\

Stranglehold - which you've already pointed out

Other ones which will depend on your opponent/Mission

Assassination

The mission specific objective - highly under rated

To the last

Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback!

100% agree for the LoC, I want it alive and 2 random traits sounds very nice.

I've assembled 2x5 Nurgle furies and they did very well last game for RoD, EoaF and the mission, but I was otherwise dominating so they didn't meet any resistance.

I don't have the bloodletters yet, do you think I should prioritise the daemonettes? I think I could make daemonettes that fit my theme (Skavens), at least more easily than horrors.

Considering the number of troops you mentioned, would you run a battalion at 1k? If so, do you have a suggestion for the second HQ?

The best person to answer this is yourself.

Bloodletters require a lot of command points to be invested upfront, they really need full command and banner of blood. They're a bit of a glass hammer, they are quite good at getting behind enemy lines, but to max that out you need 2 units.

Daemonetts as I've mentioned before a great at grabbing objectives, I've never used furies, but I'd expect furies to be better at this, only thing they're lacking is ob-sec. - Here you need to be asking  yourself was obsec required at any point in your games. If so daemonetts might have done a better job than the furies. They are popular as Slaanesh has the best Loci so the competative players stack Keepers therefore they need squads of these.

The best HQ's in the Daemon codex are exalted greater daemons, you've already got the most expensive one in your list. You could take 2nd, which would be very difficult for your opponent to deal with - until they can then you're stuffed.

Finally remember that within the rules psychic powers are part of your force and can't be changed before the game in the same way upgrades can't be swapped.
