killersquid
Hello folks, Long time Space Wolves player, but due to the pandemic, just started playing with the new book. Had my first game agaisnt my friends (competitive) Necrons list. He has been playing pretty hard, and had just come from a victory against our clubs local Dark Angels player, who is sort of top dog in our area. Needless to say, he was feeling pretty good going into our game. I was running the following. Primaris Cap with Sword and Shield (frost weapon, Warlord - Warrior Born, Wolfkin) Primaris Battle Leader with Axe and Special Bolt Rifle (armour of russ) Phobos Rune Priest (pelt of balewolf) x5 Assault intersessors w/ powerfist x5 Assault intersessors w/ powerfist x5 Assault intersessors w/ powerfist x5 infiltrators x5 infiltrators x2 plasma redemptor Dreads x5 wulfin with hammer/shield primaris banner x4 bladeguard suppressors suppressors x5 fenrisian wolves x5 eliminators He had x3 20 man warrior squads with reapers x3 5 man wraith units x2 chronomancers x1 technomancer command barge ghost arc x2 units of crypto thralls He had them all with obsec, and a pregame move. I ended up winning 75pts-74pts I chose badly on secondaries, but I was able to bait his wraiths with the Infilrators, killed them all T1/2 and then pushed into him. Things which worked well + Suppressors The stopping of overwatch was HUGE, and made charging those blocks of warriors possible + Heroic Intervention - Holy heck this was the best. I was able to charge one of his warrior blocks T1 after he veil of darknessed in, and due to this he couldn't get away from me. My Primaris Battle Leader kept chasing this unit across the whole board. +Intersessors - Really enjoyed these units, and they got a lot of attacks +infiltration of the rune priest was handy to hold back some units. Things which didn't work well - poorly chosen secondary's (not my lists fault) -slow footslogging -psychic powers of the rune priest played no part in the game. -Banner did nothing -Eliminators were stuck in the back of the board, and left holding objectives. They fired one shot the whole game. So, going with what models I have in my collection, I made the following changes. Captain with shield and sword Phobos Rune Priest Phobos Lt Primaris Lt with axe and rifle x5 Assault intersessors w/ powerfist x5 Assault intersessors w/ powerfist x5 Assault intersessors w/ powerfist x5 infiltrators x5 infiltrators x4 bladeguard Wulfin x2 plasma redemptors x5 reivers with grapple and knives x2 suppressor squads eliminators Phobos LT and reivers allow me to get units behind enemy lines without spending CP, and eliminators can be used to go after support characters, which would have helped in the previous game. What do you folks think? Other units I have to choose from are x3 outriders x3 plasma inceptors judicator primaris chappy pretty much all varieties of captains ragnar x10 infiltrators x3 more eliminators I have a bunch of firstborn stuff, but looking to just focus on primaris units. Also, looking for what should I expand the army with in the future. Really like the look of the storm speeders/gladiator vehicles, and maybe at getting some impulsors or repulsors as transports. Repuslors are almost the same cost $ as an impulsor, so it's hard to choose the little one lol. Also, still getting the hang of which relics/warlord traits/pre-game strats to use, so advice towards that is helpful too. thinking of giving the Morakis bolt to the eliminator SGT to give me re-roll 1's to wound anywhere I want. Anyway, thanks for your time! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371637-space-wolves-primaris-getting-used-to-the-9th-edition-book/ Share on other sites
CCE1981
I am guessing you are Space Wolves Proper. Runepriest powers I prefer the support powers: -Storm Caller - units within 6” count as if in light cover stacks well with the stratagem Cloaked by the Storm. This hells get all your extremely melee units get closer -Instincts Awoken - Count as in Assault Doctrine for exploding 6s if in assault doctrine additional ap on 6 to wound -Murderous Hurricane stops even more overwatch Also best relic for a Runepriest is Armor of Russ for that 4++ Plasma Inceptors are incredible, surprisingly resilient and do a lot of damage. Note Phobos Lt can’t infiltrate Re-roll everything to hit is GOLD!!! I go Succesors for this but if your unit is in the Assault Doctrine on the charge re-roll everything that isn’t a 6. Your 6s count as an additional hit, I take Whirlwind of Rage as a Successor making my 6s count as three hits, I hit more often than I swung. If you take a Chaplain with Aura of Majesty or the Vox Espiritum the Litany of Hate gives you a re-roll hits bubble, couple with Canticle of Hate, for additional charge range, or Exhortation of Rage, for a +1 to wound, all at 9” bubble! Suggested Chaplain on bike. For Captains on Wolves I wouldn’t go with a Primaris Captain. I find they have trouble keeping up. I think a Captain with a Jump Pack is better. Thunderhammer and Storm Shield is great, remember your +1 to hit means his hammer will hit on 2s. Assault Intercessors I like the Thunderhammer more, I find the extra damage is better than going from ap -2 to ap -3.
