The Guard is one of those armies that I've always wanted to do, but never quite found the right combination of theme and models that really clicked for me, and with such a high potential model count, that's always been a huge stumbling block. Now though with the release of the plastic Krieg kit I have a basis for a homebrew regiment concept; there's a bit of cleaning up to do, but I'm really happy with the look so far.

I wanted these models to be able to pull double duty in both a Guard army and as Brood Brothers in my Genestealer Cult, so I've combined the Krieg kit with heads from the new Cadian upgrade sprue and the Genestealer Cult upgrade kit, and have put them on the newer 28.5mm base size to allow a bit more room for basing.

To start with I've just got the one squad from the Kill Team Octarius box and I'll be working my way through that and patiently waiting to see what other goodies we have on the way for Krieg that will let me expand further!

Kitbashing is what Guard are great for, good to see the new Krieg models already being put to work for the wider Guard representation :biggrin.: Have you thought about what colours you'll be going for, and the basing scheme? Hopefully more Krieg bits can come soon, but with converting the models like this you have plenty of scope already  Keep us updated on your progress!

I know for sure the basing scheme will be the same red desert/Martian theme I've used on my Space Marines (pic below for reference). What I'm trying to decide is whether or not my Guard regiment would have coasts in a similar colour to that for camo purposes or not.

Astartes base:

I did a couple of sketches in impcat (using a Cadian because I couldn't find a Krieg svg file), the first is a red-brown uniform with darker brown hard armour:

And the other is a colour scheme which will tie in more closely to my existing Genestealer Cult army:

Looking great – nice combination of parts. Scheme-wise, I prefer the dark armour and ruddy fabric; I find fabrics benefit from some hue to show off their texture, while solid smooth areas can look striking and bold in neutrals.

Great mix of parts!

I’d hate to argue with apologist but I prefer your second scheme.

I think the contrast between the Armour and fatigues looks really good.

Not at all – discussion's what the forum's for, after all! :)

Either could work very nicely; always worth getting a couple of different viewpoints. Perhaps see which you prefer painting after a couple of test models?

I am having similar dilemma thinking about my guard kill team. The idea of camouflage is cool, but on the table top, miniatures almost always look better contrasting with their base. So I’d go with the second scheme - if the red is the same as the basing red (not a clashing red). In a way, this may get some camouflage benefit and still the contrast, so is a best of both worlds.
