Idol thought today while I was working on something else. Is there a reason that Necrons don't have Titans? Or Titan sized machines of war? I mean Monoliths and the Vaults are pretty large but I wouldn't call them Titan sized. I know there is a forgeworld defense battery but still not a Titan

I don’t think they need something as primitive and large as a titan. They can build super devastating weapons in much smaller platforms.

And sometimes they build obelisks

The Seraptek is nice- I would like to see another version of that, as it works better than a Monolith as a Knight-equivalent with it having an invuln and the titanic rule that Monoliths don't. Anything bigger would probably be something like a super-Monolith, a giant floating symbol of Necron power.

You might be thinking of the Megalith, Lord_Ikka, which was so large as to have whole monoliths detaching from it to descend like death onto the battlefield. I think it was mentioned in the 5th Ed codex, and IIRC Zandrekh used it to break some siege or another.

The Necron list released by the Specialist Games studio for Epic: Armageddon included two super-heavies: the Æonic Orb and the Abattoir (also called the World Harvester). They can be found using the Wayback Machine here. Not Titans, per se, but by this point I think the developers were starting to differentiate the species more. The Squats – which oddly enough were a very successful army in Epic scale –  similarly had no walkers; relying on super-heavy vehicles like the land train. Both the Orb and Abattoir were, to use Lord_Ikka's words, 'floating symbols of Necron power', which fit the background rather nicely.

Of course, that's all very old, and the Necrons have gone through quite a bit of development space since. If we do ever see Titan-sized units for Necrons, I'd expect them to be Canoptek constructs, and to see designs drawn from insect and similar inspiration, like the Seraptek Trokair linked above.

  • 1 month later...

Hi guys, meant to post this earlier, but I came across something in a new novel, The Infinite and the Divine by Robert Rath:

And above all those stasis-displays floated a great metal conqueror wyrm, seeded on planets the Necron fleet bypassed to hunt their population to extinction.

The context of this giant "wyrm" is this was part of Trazyn's War of the Heavens museum gallery.  It's floating above things like Eldar skimmers, so it had to be bigger (otherwise it wouldn't be very visible), perhaps something at least Armiger-sized if not Knight-sized...but perhaps not to the scale of the larger Titans.  So it's something Necrons used on worlds they "bypassed", suggesting those weren't priority targets.

This giant "wyrm" sounded like something that's in the Necron arsenal but don't bother fielding much anymore, probably because it wasn't seen as that important.  They're slowly awakening and it's like the most useful things get moved up in the load order, whereas things like this are like we'll get to it when we get to it.  I imagine it like how we see a lot of Horus Heresy-specific big vehicles, like they're cool and all, but it's just not worth the effort to maintain and field them right now.

In terms of look & feel, I imagine it like the Necron Canoptek Tomb Sentinel, but biggerer.  Just some sharing, I remembered this thread and was enjoying this novel, and came back here to share.
