I've seen the DA list of Gary Sacco coming third on a tournament: on goonhammer

<https://www.goonhammer.com/competitive-innovations-in-9th-supermajor-surprise/>

I would like to try it (with some tweaks due to model limitation) , but I'm not sure how I would play it.

Are the DW command squad to go hiding with a TM

Why is one TM with rites of war, is it to give it to the big Azrael castle?

I guess the big blub of DW is to score stubborn defiance with the apoticary babysitting.

I see two big sections in the army staying behind on objectives but not sure what is going forward to challenge board control...

Any advise? :) don't you want to try it yourself?

I just looked at the list and it looks interesting.  The blurb under the list "why it's interesting in 9th" gives a pretty on-point explanation of how the list works.

1. The command squads to do hide with talonmasters to make them difficult to deal with.

2. TM with rites of war gives ObSec to other core units in the list.  The Terminators already have it from the Vanguard detachment.

3. Yeah sure.

4. The terminators are your forward/mid board control. You won't always be combat squading them.

The whole Talonmaster + Bodyguard combo is way too cheesy for me, so wouldn't try out that part of the list. It is cool to find some of the units you rarely see in a DA list though. The thunderfire cannon is interesting since a lot of non-Ravenwing lists lack mobility. Don't try to move faster - make your opponents move slower!

Personally prefer Ravenwing attack bikes with meltas, but Eradicators are such great-looking models. Glad he was able to find a use for them.

I've tried it against a friend Thousand San, I was completely rubbish XD I didn't know at all how to play (I'm usually playing ravenwing).

I'm really struggling to understand how to play the terminators. Do they stay behind for stubborn defiance or move to the front to charge and get objectives?

I feel like ravenwing lists are easier for noobs like me were you can move 14'' if you deployed badly.

Anyway, was good to try and see my hellblasters on the table!

Two general ways to use those Deathwing:

1. Combat squads. Break them into two groups. Group one is the cyclone missile launcher guys and storm bolter guys. Group two is the close combat guys. Keep the ranged half back on an objective, send the close combat guys up the board to smash face.

2. Send em all up the middle with the apothecary and own the middle of the board.

As for the rest of the army:

Azrael sticks with the Hellblasters and Eradicators (and maybe the ranged termies if you keep them back) to give them rerolls and a 4+ invulnerable save to shooting.

Suppressor squad turns off Overwatch on whichever unit you want to charge and does a little damage, Thunderfire cannon messes with your opponent's movement and maybe kills some chaff.

Talonmasters are shooting platforms protected by the command squad Bodyguard rule. They can also jump into combat with the Heavenfall Blade or take objectives with Rites of War.

Apothecary does what it do, and the Champion goes out and smacks characters in close combat.

That said, TSons is a good counter to this because they can slam out mortal wounds, turn off your invulnerable saves, and just generally mess with your setup. You'd probably want a very different list for taking on Thousand Sons.

I'm good friends with Garry irl. He never breaks up the terminators into combat squads. Stubborn defiance with the Talonmaster and everything else moves up. Tsons are just brutal right now, get some more games in and you'll do better. He plays tons of games and knows his army inside and out and don't be afraid to adjust the list to suit your own style.
