sal of manders
I'm putting together a fire raptor and I'm wondering what's the best thing to use for filling large-ish gaps in resin models. I would normally just default to greenstuff, but I've heard that milliput works better for resin. Wanted to get people's opiniions before I went out and bought things. Pic below is a dry fit, so parts could be wiggled around a bit. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371740-gap-filling-resin/ Share on other sites
Imren
When I put together my fire raptor I pinned the hell out of it and used 2-component epoxy glue. But that just for assembling it. For gap filling I recommend Milliput and then you drop a wee bit of IPA (isopropylalcohol) to make it much smoother. I recommend to stay away from 1-component gap fillers because they shrink and therefore don't completely fill the gap and need additional runs of gap filling. You'll save time and headache with greenstuff or Milliput (better option). Grotsmasha
Miliput has the added advantage of taking to sanding much better than greenstuff too. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371740-gap-filling-resin/#findComment-5743127 Share on other sites
sal of manders
okay that seems consistent with the little bit of research I'd already done. Since milliput doesn't seem to have the (obvious) color change aspect of greenstuff, how does one tell if it's been mixed properly / sufficiently? Also how long is it actually "workable" after mixing? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371740-gap-filling-resin/#findComment-5743146 Share on other sites
Imren
Milliput comes in cylindrical bars, So if you need to mix large chunk you cut off the same measured length from respective cylinder. If you need small amounts then roll the two components separately and eye-gauge the ball diameters, if they are pretty much the same then mix them. I find that milliput don't require much 50/50 accuracy for good curing and accepts ca 0-15% discrepancy from the 50/50 mix ratio. It gradually hardens with time, the first 45-60 min its quite workable, but after an hour you feel it starts stiffen a bit. But Mixing in alcohol changes this to a longer time, When do my gap seams with milliput + IPA I wait at least overnight for curing before painting. Even with alcohol it is surely dry and cured after a night. Brother Morgan
I use milliput on all of my vehicles and figures as it’s cheap, easy to use and as it’s been said earlier, it sands really well.
