I think most of this is still applicable": http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370238-unit-of-the-week-chief-librarian-mephiston/

I personally am not using him at all. Too big a cost, for a tad too much fragility and swingyness. If I want a glass-canon, I take DC.

I also haven't really tried him in 9th. I am toying with the idea of running him with 5 BGVs in an Impulsor. They offer protection and volume of attacks. Mephy offer psychic support and heavier hitting power against tough targets.

I think he can be considered as part of a moving castle formation when you prefer to have a Sanguinary Discipline-caster instead of a Chaplain, Captain or Lieutenant.
Sanguinary Priest is still a must imo so I would not exchange him for Mephy

I agree, I have no idea why they pushed him towards close combat but kept his sword at damage D3 meaning he might not even take a out a space marine. Even if they gave his sword profile d3+1 I think you'd find people more inclined to take him.

The Libby Dread with wings just seems like a more efficient missile.

Played in an escalation campaign recently (500 to 1500). Mephiston was in my list at 1000 and 1500 and was consistently my mvp. I’d put him in for fun as i like the model but he always exceeded expectations and took a surprising amount of work to be killed. I generally nominated him as my blade of sanguinius!
