Hi there

So, as the title suggests, I was wondering what SM units would benefit most from a combination of master artisans (MA) and whirlwind of rage (WOR)?

I was thinking units with low-volume, high-strength firepower, or units with a single powerful weapon. As MA can be used in both shooting and fighting, units with both. Some candidate that popped into mind include:

  • Intercessors with the grenade launcher and a powerfist or thunder hammer on the sergeant, re-rolling a miss with the S6 grenade or the s8 power fist/thunder hammer would be good, and WOR on the power fists/thunder hammers good as well.
  • Tactical squads with (in rough order) las-cannon, missile launcher, multi-melta or plasma cannon with fist or hammer
  • venerable dreadnoughts with twin las cannons (hit on 2s, roll double 1s, re-roll a las cannon shot)
  • Terminators with CML (re-roll missile shot if missed, a power fist miss, WOR great with powerful melee attacks)
  • Small units of 2 company veterans with a combi-weapon/shield on one and melee weapon/shield on the other.

Any others that spring to mind? I was thinking that MA/WOR might work well, but you'd have to really "lean" your list into it to get the most out of it.

Whirlwind is THE best successor chapter tactics. You needn't to calculate about what unit or what list suits for it; just pick it.

So the question becomes much simpler: if I wanna play a successor, which tactics would pair with whirlwind better? When would master artisans picked before other cadidates?

IMO artisan is good for "balanced" or more shooty armies. If you have multiple "teleport" units which need a crucial 9" charge, pick Hungry. If you don't worry the charging rolls much and want max melee output, pick Borned. If too many psyker armies popped in your meta, Warded could also be ok.
