In an unexpected turn I'm going to be playing my first games of 9th ed (and first of 40k in about 8 years) the plan is to play 1 or more quite casual combat patrol games so 1 patrol detachment and 500point limit. I'll be up against Space Wolves and don't really have any idea what I'll be up against. I worked out a few ideas for lists each of which kind of leans on a specific theme. I figured it doesn't really matter much bit thought I'd share and see if anyone had any ideas for tactics or ideas to go with.

List 1

Master of Possession (Malefic Tome, cursed Earth and mutated invigoration/infernal power)

5CSM meltagun, power speed icon of vengeance

6 slaanesh possessed (icon of excess)

1 greater possessed

1venomcrawler

Rough idea: rush at them with characters, possessed and venomcrawler and just see what happens while keeping marines on objective to keep scoring.

List 2

Lord Discordant

10 cultists

Venomcrawler

Maulerfiend

Plan: all eggs, one basket, charge everything at them and rely on target saturation of high T multiwound Daemon engines in a small game while cultists hide on objective.

I had some other lists Inc a jump lord with a horde of cultists with some raptors and a maulerfiend

Or jump lord with raptors, a heldrake, cultists and obliterator

And the last idea was around max csm bodies

Dark apostle

10 csm

5csm

5 raptors

5 possessed

They are all roughly 500 points and I'm not convinced by any of them, but any suggestions for which warlord traits etc would work in each example (or tweaks for that matter) would be appreciated.

Truth be told I kinda like this list.  That's kinda inspirational actually.

I've been playing 500 pts of Crusade as of late.  This is the type of list that worries me because you kinda have all bases covered.  The Obliterators worry me as always, then I see the Heldrake and I'm like "I don't think I had to deal with that this edition" AND you got some Raptors that can goes with it?  I'm kinda surprised all that fits in 500 points (in that that's good).

The issue is that it is a lone Obliterator, so he'd be easily removed as a threat I guess. To me at 500 points or feels a little "Beardy" as the old-school terminology of white dwarf would have it. Also after the way I built my heldrake I'm terrified of touching the bloody thing much less transport it!

The good thing is that I think my opponent is kinda up for the challenge of whatever turns up turns up to help learn how to deal with things so that helps.

No room for combi flamer on CSM champ? Sure not a top pick, but fits WB IMO.

I was trying for WYSIWYG to be fair.

I went with list one in the first game, he had 2 blood claw packs each with a wolf guard terminator in, wolf priest with jump pack and a couple of multimelta attack bikes.

There ended up being a brawl mid table, I forgot loads of things in my own rules, Inc death to the false emperor and that masters of possession can cast twice a turn and basically completely hamstrung myself.

Second game I merged two of my lists together using list 1 and a cultist/raptor/maulerfiend list with a jump lord. This was a lot closer, I was better and manouvering my stuff although he was able to block the maulerfiend's progress with a rhino and I might have run some of my fights in melee in the wrong order, as he was able to use some interrupts to get rid of some potentially serious threats before they could strike. I also blew some cp in silly ways, looking back I learned a lot, but knowing my army's rules and the core game rules better would have helped.

It looks like I'll be playing another game against the same opponent, so I have a reasonable(ISH) idea of what he'll have at his disposal. We're probably going to aim for a single 1500pt game this time around.

Based on what I know I have available and what went well before then I'm thinking of running something that involves the following.

Lord discordant with crown of the blasphemer

Jump lord with lightning claws and malefic Tome for double boons.

Dark apostle w/ extra prayer

Csm blob with bolters

Cultist blob for home objective

Terminators

Khorne raptors

Maulerfiend

Venomcrawler

Hellforged plasma predator form legends

And then seeing what else I can fit in in the form of obliterators, possessed, or psykers.

He's likely to have lots of blood claws with wolf guard leaders, wolf guard terminators, intercessors, a redemptor, attack bikes, and is likely to take relics that do things like make me fight last or up his offensive output.

Anyone got any good ideas?

I think an undeniable Death Hex sorcerer could help cut the terminators down, perhaps? Regardless of who is shooting/striking them down, unless it’s attacks that wouldn’t trigger their invulns, of course. Not sure how worthwhile it is, but could help.
