I mean they can still be leveraged by Raven guard, white scars, wolves and possibly templars. Flamers and launchers make for a cheap unit with a lot of STR 10 3 damage attacks. They're just not able to be supported by a lot so need some practice with target selection.

Well, the assault variant isn't entirely useless for some chapters, true, but even then I'm not sure if they're worth it for us specifically. But as something to mess around with in a casual battle, why not if you if have the models anyway. Personally I reaaaally don't like the ridiculous drill arms though. I don't like Aggressor arms either for example, but the Centurion drills are just... urgh. If I ever do try to play them as Assault, I'll just probably leave off the drills so that they're just the fist-lookalikes (incidentally mine are painted as CF).

The only problem is that the drills are kind of what help differentiate the two at a glance so it can lead to confusion. Also are essentially cosmetic since they hit at base strength without the drills. Probably better just to find a better proxy for the model entirely.
Want to recall seeing some conversion that had the assault variant brandishing some kind of mauls, rather than thd fugly drills. Granted i still dont like the look of cents even then, but the interndt is littered with improved 3d modeled designs. Perhaps the one avenue where i much prefer a 3rd party redisgn over an original

I'm a big proponent for "unconfusing" models - but I think it's rather clear it's not the shooty version when it's missing the specific underslung guns, and the fists basically look like power fists anyway. Being the only WYSIWYG exception in the army wouldn't make it too hard to remember either.

Still, given I already can barely half of what I want to into a 2k marine list, the chances of them actually making it into a list seem rather slim.

So I'm thinking of bringing back the 5 marine Las-Plas crusdaer squad as some cheep filler (updated to 9th Ed conventions by having the Plas bit be a Combi-Plasma on the Sword Brother).

It's 115pts and will largely be forgettable at the back of the table when compared to the bigger threats around them but can put some pain on mutli-wound targets from turn 1 onwards.

Also A 5 marine Plas-Plas squad packing chainswords for 110pts could have some nice value backing up a large Primaris Crusader squad.
