Greetings brothers / sisters.

I am infamous amongst my gaming group for my love of all things astartes and have a large and diverse collection of marines. Most of these are firstborn with the exception of an all-primaris UM successor army and some deathwatch kill teams. Templars and blood angels are my most beloved chapters and so, with the advent of some ‘proper’ chapter specific primaris marines I have committed to expand my firstborn with a primaris force.

The brief is quite simple. It needs to include units that I consider to be ‘Templar-worthy’ (ie fits the background) and need not be competitive. Ideally it can be mixed and matched with the firstborn but I would like it to be able to stand on its own at 2k points also. My thoughts thus far are this:

Marshall

Castellan

Chaplain

Judiciar

BG ancient

Emperors champion

Helbrecht

Grimaldus

5 bladeguard

10 sword brethren

Impulsor (for the bladeguard)

Repulsor (for the sb)

Redemptor

3 outriders

3x 20 crusader squads.

That should keep me out of trouble / pocket for a while.

My questions for the knowledgeable relate to the crusader squads. I wanted to build them in such a way as to be able to field 3x 20 or 2x 20 with some options. For example, being able to have 8 of each neophyte loadout, but also being able to use 6 of the crusaders to be intercessors and another 6 assault intercessors. Questions:

Would assault intercessors need shoulders painted differently to crusaders, meaning they couldn’t be dual use without say magnets?

Would normal intercessors / assault intercessors still use chains for weapons or is this restricted to crusader squads? I’m assuming not?

Would it be ok to use crusader marines for intercessors / assault or would I be better using the normal non tabard marines (is this something only crusaders use?)

Looking forward to such a big assembly project once the other kits are available. Thanks in advance.

Everything is unassembled still (heck, not even procured yet)?

You will want to mix and match intercessor models with assault intercessors with crusaders. Get some copies of the upgrade kit. Mix in knightly helms everywhere. If you get some spare helmets from your sword brethren, mix those in as well.

You'll want to consider getting DIY chains. Like get some small link jewelry chain and wrap it around the arms and weapons. Not every model has to have chains, but the more the better.

Don't worry about the tabards. Mix those in as well. Again, more the merrier, but not everyone has to have one.

I'd resist the urge, depending on how many regular intercessors you have, to put all the knightly bits on a few models, rather you'll want to spread the wealth around.

EDIT: And don't worry about pads either. Just do the crusader way, get pairs that look good together

Thanks for the advice. Yes I have the army box but nothing else as of yet. Have only started to assemble the crusader squad so far. I do have some lengths of fine chain so hopefully can put them to use. The emperors champion chest bothers me so I was thinking to use one of the left hands from the upgrade kit and put his rosarius on a chain around his neck.
