Really depends on what you need, what your plan is and what you'd like to do!

The real big decision is going to be: what army do I want? When you know that, you can then find the support material that works best.

If you want marines and marine adjacent type of army, the biggest step is to get your hands on a box of Mk3 or Mk4 plastic marines from GW. These two sets will be the cornerstone for anything you want to dabble in. That should help while you try and figure out the legion you want. Sadly, unless you find an extra copy of Betrayal at Calth or Burning of Prospero, super cheap access to lots of models are going to be tough. If you see a box in the wild for a decent price, always a good idea to scoop it up if money allows.

Mechanicum is a bit harder to do as most of their base line is resin. However you have a HUGE conversion opportunity with the army so you're not married to resin only.

Guard/Solar Aux armies are definitely way open to interpretation. They encompass anything from standard cadians all the way up to the specialized Solar Aux resin kits on the FW store.

The real easy army to get access to is going to be Custodes/Silent Sisters. Nearly everything you can use in HH have a plastic comparable version so you can definitely make a 40k Custodes army into a HH army with little obstacle.

Regardless, choosing your army will dictate what books you want to go with. Everyone of course will need base rules (https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/The-Horus-heresy-Age-of-Darkness-Rulebook-2017?_requestid=5759193) and from there, your army flavor will determine if you need a legion + army book (https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-AU/The-Horus-Heresy-Legiones-Astartes-Age-of-Darkness-Legions https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-AU/The-Horus-heresy-legiones-Astartes-Age-of-Darkness-Army-List), a mechanium book (https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-AU/The-Horus-Heresy-Mechanicum-Taghmata-Army-List) or one of the campaign books that contains the rules for SA/Guard equivalent (https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-AU/Horus-Heresy-Book-4-Conquest-SB-EN-2019)

Then, of course, there's this place where pretty much everyone has a good working knowledge of things. That means we can help answer very specific questions or give insight on how we ourselves play.

There is one army that was missed. This army is honestly a bit more for hobbyists but has been the project I've had the most fun on. Daemons of the Ruinstorm. You pretty much build your army from the ground up with only select base sizes for units being your restriction.

Like nighthaunt from AOS? Congrats you have an army of the screaming souls of the damned. Do certain daemon aesthetics not appeal to you but you love the rules? Welcome to the army that you don't have to proxy.

You're absolutely welcome to ignore the sales pitch by the way. Just figured I'd throw this out there.

Welcome! You may also find some help in this thread (on keeping cost down): http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370015-cheapest-way-to-30k/

If you just wanted to get a feel you could get a copy of 7th edition rule book (very similar rules), some of that plastic infantry and play Zone Mortalis (yes this is another rules layer, but should be available free).

With a new edition imminent id second finding a cheap copy of 7th to get you started if you want to right away, but id really say wait a couple of months if you want to play legion as they appear to be jumping the scale up.

Also check out the Legions card game on steam/mobile, even if you ignore the actual game you can view all the HH art and some unique bits by rolling through the card library, plus all the names you will ever need :D

All of this is pure speculation, and the scale part is just wrong. The New Praetor have the same size as the older ones

I mean... Ive seen some of the new stuff side by side with the plastics and they are definitely bigger, which seems to also be the case with the new plastics. Im not sure giving bad advice to new players is a great look.

I want to get into 30k, where do i start

I think the first question is to figure out what army you would like to play :) While different factions offer different playstyles, I find personally that the lore and aesthetic of an army is what attracts me to it. Whether you want to do a Space Marine Legion or one of the other factions (Mechanicum, Solar Auxilia, Ruinstorm Daemons, Imperialis Militia/Warp Cults, etc.), I think browsing the lexicanum pages for lore or if you're super interested in the narrative, even reading the Horus Heresy novels or reading/discussing the lore on forums such as the ones on this site can definitely help you find out what army you might like. If you're going from a visual standpoint, I guess you could find art on Google Images as well as the wikis, as well as browse the FW site to look at the ranges and just look at people's painted armies on the internet.

Once you know what army you would like to play, my advice is to start with the core Troops choices of your army. If you want to know how to equip them you can always check the forums, or download Battlescribe (it's free, and is an incredible tool). So for most Marine armies this will often be Tactical Squads, however there are other options and these can be further expanded by Rites of War. So my advice is just start with the core troops choices of your army, and if you need any help figuring what your options are for that, you can always ask round here because the Bolter and Chainsword community is pretty friendly from my experience :)

Forge World and main GW produce some awesome models that can be used for this (for Space Marines, you can't go far wrong with the plastic Mark III and Mark IV kits, but just shout out if you wanna go another direction and the folks here can help you figure it out :) )
