New project and questions

Looking at the possibility of dumping two of my marine armies in Simple Purple and starting over(I am not however lowering my army numbers as they will be simply going into two newer armies as I paint them(grrr), I would just rather repurpose than buy new.  I was thinking of doing a Legion of the Damned type marine force based around a couple Impulsors, blade guard, assault intercessors, a cool vanguard squad I built with reiver bodies and HH Furies. I even have an idea of converting up a Sanguinor as a Grim Reaper type character. For everything else however, are there competitive builds that do not rely on Sanguinary Guard/ jump pack/ Blade guard spam? I kind of want to have that Legion -"Here to save the day" theme. With Necrons assault armies on the rise, Death Guard screwing over everyones toughness if they get close, I am kind of seeing a mix of strong assault with strong shooting being a theme and the endurance being glass cannon.
