My son has the fun of Xmas and his birthday on top of each other…..

I wondered about getting him this 500 point lineup to paint and use in Combat Patrol battles:

Librarian in Phobos Armor

Incursor squad

Infiltrator squad

Suppressor squad

Eliminator squad

= 500 with no upgrades I think?

Anything I should change here?

Seems a nice army to start off into the game!

What you;re listing is essentially the Start Collecting: Vanguard box, plus the librarian, you could maybe add in the vanguard lieutenant?

An all-Phobos army will not actually be that great. It lacks on many levels, and your son would be starting off at a disadvantage whenever he plays.

There is a Dark Angels patrol box with a good mix of units and (I think) custom Dark Angels bits for the models.

Oh….that’s much better value!

Essentially switches my selection to two infiltrator squads and the HQ to a lieutenant.

To the person commenting after you — for my son it’s 80% about painting 20% about playing. Saying that —> from that boxset is there an obvious 1 unit substitution that would make it more competitive?

Like. If your son is primarily playing yourself, or reasonable people, he won't be at a disadvantage. You don't see may of those units in tournament armies, but they all have their place. I won a tourney this year with 5x infiltrators and 5x incursors. Phobos libbies were popular near the start of 9th, Suppressors and Eliminators have had good boosts recently.

In terms of the models in that set, you can use the 10 infiltrators as either that, or Incursors. The actual models are similar enough that no one will bat an eyelid, offering your son some flexibility in how they play.

Good/fun additions to that force would be

  • phobos librarian - normally ~15-20 but available for £8.99 with the correct issue of Warhammer Imperium magazine from Hachette [issue 11]
  • The vanguard set is lacking melee, you can also get great deals on Assault intercessors from the warhammer Imperium mag also [issue 13]
  • An Invictor Warsuit is a cool centrepiece model for this size game/army, and fits the phobos theme of the army.
  • Dark Angels typically love plasma - a 10 man unit of Hellblasters adds some serious firepower to the list, and benefit from DA rules.

He will be at a disadvantage because an all-Phobos list is very weak, not because of who he plays against. Plenty of tournament lists use Phobos infantry, but those lists also have other units playing different roles in the battle. Phobos are there for early objective camping and/or deep strike screening mostly.

If it is 80% about how the models look, then it is hard to say which should be swapped out because that is personal preference.

Suppressors and Eliminators could be swapped for a 5-man squad of Hellblasters or a Redemptor Dreadnought for some punch.
