tylertt
Hello everyone, been a long while since I posted here, but I am looking at expanding my small Ultramarine force and am unsure of where to begin. I'm primarily a Tyranid player but always enjoy the refresh of breaking out my other factions for some fun. I've only ran my Ultras 3-4 times since the beginning of 9th and the last time was back in March I think. So I am looking for advice on what units would be a smart add to work well with what I've got/what plays well with Ultramarines. Not necessarily going for super competitive, but want units that work well with their strengths. Here is what is currently in my collection. Full Indomitus Set (saves from typing them all out) Primaris Librarian Terminator Captain First Born Captain First Born Chaplain First Born Librarian First Born era Tigurius x3 10man Tac Sqauds (Plasma load out, Melta Load Out, and Grav load outs) x5 Sniper Scouts x10 Assault Marines x2 Drop Pods Razorback Rhino x5 Company Vets (All plasma'd out) x5 Sternguard (Combi-Meltas) Dreadnought Land Raider x5 Devastators (x2 plas, x2 Las) x3 Centurions (Grav load out, but can proxy/working on magnets) Predator (full Lascannon loadout) Prot 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372483-advice-for-what-to-add-next/ Share on other sites
Prot
I'm sorry no one has answered this yet. You're going to get a lot of potential units advised to you because to be quite honest I believe the 'generic' marine codex is firmly planted in a large town called 'Mediocrity'. The immediate thing I notice missing is a lack of Redemptor(s). They are a solid unit for any marine army, competitive or not. They have to be carefully used and buffed to be competitive. One or two is certainly not omnipotent, but their higher wounds, -1 damage rule, and decent firepower loadout makes them a very thematic and flexible unit. To add to them you would consider a Techmarine. Additionally the Ultramarines are one of the better infantry based astartes. As such an apothecary upgraded to selfless healer, etc is a VERY common option as a result. (Anything with 2 wounds disappears like butter on hot toast these days.) One additional note. "Classic" Tigurius is not in the current codex, so I would just use him as the new one, until you get around to replacing him. To be 100% honest, and this is just my very personal opinion coming out here, the UM Characters are one of the few things that help them remain relevant. So even though solo psykers are going the way of the do-do bird, Tigurius is still solid in my opinion. He will pass almost any test, and his -1 to hit ability is usually relevant in most turns. Hope that gives you something to chew on. tylertt 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372483-advice-for-what-to-add-next/#findComment-5769165 Share on other sites
tychobi
Inceptors, infiltraitors, and eradicators all do great work as ultras and can add some unique abilities to the roster tylertt and The Pounder 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372483-advice-for-what-to-add-next/#findComment-5769265 Share on other sites
BLACK BLŒ FLY
Devastator Centurions are great - my build for Ultramarines is 2x Grav Cannon & 1x Twin Lascannon, all with hurricane bolters… they will decimate infantry. I agree Inceptors are great as long as you take the plasma variant - we have a strat to reroll 1s to hit so you’re always overcharging. I’ve run Hellblasters in the past but you’d be better off with Eradicators plus you can take heavy melta rifles which are just wicked - 3x Heavy Melta & Multi-Melta is 10 shots. I prefer Primaris for troops… Infiltrators are a great choice and look great. You will definitely want a pair of Victrix Honorguard to protect your HQ. I’m partial to Calgar and Tigirius. The Indomnitus Lt. is really good too. tylertt
Thank you everyone! This has definitely helped me narrow down my focus on what to grab next for my Ultras. I think Calgar, his guard, and an apothecary are on the list for character units. Intercessors and a unit of Infiltrators are now on the troops list. I think a pair of Redemptors and a plasma Inceptor squad would help fill out what I'd be missing. Going to be my 2022 project to add these units, so I'll be keeping an eye on this forum and sharing my progress when the time comes. Emurian
Not sure if I am to late responding to this but il give my 5 cents.Troops are the most important thing your missing, followed by a redemptor as pointed out above. (Though tbh with UM I think not having any vehichles or walkers is not a bad thing on itself to deny your opponent ideal targets for their AT weapons. The UM docterine works best for the infantry imo.)The Apothecary is a good unit but you need a unit to synch with him to get the most value like IMO bladeguard veterans, terminators. Kinda surprised none suggested Bladeguard veterans or terminators, both units are pretty solid and will give you a good melee unit to add to your army. In this edition you WILL end up in combat, so its not a luxury to bring along a unit that can contest the objectives in mid and smacking off whatever is guarding it. Both termies and BV are rlly solid in these roles. You can also place them in the midsts of your gunline to function as a counter assault unit if needed. With this edition you will need to have some unit thats either very good in burst DPS to clear off the enemy of an objective or be incredibly resilient to hold these objectives. tylertt and BLACK BLŒ FLY 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372483-advice-for-what-to-add-next/#findComment-5770325 Share on other sites
