Isnt there a big Lord of The Rings TV show coming out soon (on Amazon)?

Thats another big boost for GW/hobbying especially if they tie into it or try to caoitalise on it.

The Battle of Hallins Hall sic sold out in jigtime recently

Middle Earth stuff will probably get a bump in sales initially. Not sure how much that will benefit 40k and/or tabletop gaming as a wider hobby.

The Amazon show does not look like it will have the same cultural impact as the LoTR movies did. All signs point to it being a "non-faithful" adaptation of the property, and those usually do not go over well.

At the very least its a no brainer for Gdubs to put some big oul LOTR posters up in all their store windows when that show comes out.

Wont be anywhere near as big a bump as the movies

I think the new LotR show takes place in the second age, so fall of numenor and all that.

Wi GW have the rights to make models from the shows’ content? I wonder if we’ll see a third LotR range hit the shelves.

It does take place in the second age. At least, that is the time frame on which they loosely based the show.

Movie/game rights for LoTR are separate from tabletop game rights, so GW may be able to make second age models if they so choose.

Hey folks,

Following on from Henry Cavill talking briefly about Warhammer on the Graham Norton show at the weekend there's an article on the BBC news pages about Warhammer and Wargaming in general and the way it's becoming more mainstream and more socially accepted.

Well :cuss! It's time to get out of it then ....  (grumbles)

Maybe someone else has already mentioned this or at least had this idea somewhere else.

From time to time,"main stream" will shine it's eye on a niche market. Some stick, others fade.

I'm just not convinced 40k will stick. I think Kevin will do everything he can to make it so, but the general public attention is quite fickle and an IP only gets to be a "Break though" that's shiny and new to exposure once.

I'm also undecided whether being main stream is a good or bad thing if you're a long serving hobbyist. But i'm leaning towards the side that it wouldn't.

As it was Henry Cavill's appearance on TV that instigated all this, he's outright stated in an interview that a Warhammer 40k film or TV series would be his dream project:

https://www.empireonline.com/tv/news/exclusive-henry-cavill-talks-his-dream-project-warhammer-40000/

He talks with great respect for the setting, if he was to be involved in any project I think he would ensure it would be treated with the appropriate care.

I think its more about growth than a big mainstream breakout

Is 40k, growing? I didn't watch it but from what i saw Harvey said he started when he was a kid not recently.

My observations though anecdotal, is that after the excluding them games-workshop table top offering is shrinking in general - highlight tabletop.

I said it on a forum about 10 years ago, then again here last year, I think. But i suspect that games workshop is somewhat generational. Like Subbuteo or Philately. I'm not that old, but anecdotally (again) I've been told in the 80s Subbuteo was in every kids house, in the 60s every kid had a stamp collection.

I'm sure you already know the 80/20, and the 80/20 of the 20 and so on and so on. - This is what I'm observing at least with the miniatures.

For the IP, yeah that's growing. But we've already covered that.

Unlike Subbuteo GW is growing from video games not being wioed out by it

8th got a lot of people back into it.

Dawn of War and Total War definitely got some amount of new people into it

Pandemmic got a lot of people back into it and newly into it

Sales this year matching last year

I think its normally a cyclical thing of a lot of people get into it as kids, then drift away, then come back into it.

Sales this year matched last year?

I'm not sure if you're talking about fiscal or calendar year? But if that's the case, this is the first I've heard of it.

Then from May

At constant currency, the Board’s estimate of sales for the six months to 28 November 2021 are not less than £197 million (2020: £186.8 million). This has been driven by growth in our trade and retail channels, following the reopening of the majority of our retail stores.

Marginal sales growth compared with the same period last year, with an expected hit to profits from increased shipping costs and exchange rate fluctuations.

Very surprised, mostly due to how good the 2020 sales were during covid.

I'll be interested if this continues into 2022 and well after.

I think for GW hobbiest (like myself) I'm in a bizarre situation, that for the hobby to improve. The company as a hole needs a "knock", not a critical knock out, just a knock. I am concerned that if maximizing or leveraging the 40k IP in other mediums and/or increasing profit margins will be detrimental to the table to hobby for the table top war gaming community.

When i've brought this up before, I've had a "quit your whining" response to just quit or shut up.

Honestly, if even 1 hobby club near me played mantic, i already would have. - It makes me sad to say that.
