Bloody Legionnaire
In browsing the internet, the standard Dreadnought kit appears to be very small and a little derpy compared to the Ironclad, SWs, and BAs dreadnoughts. I have never owned the standard Dreadnought kit, is this perception or reality? I understand that the Ironclad is on it's own base which probably gives a little bit of height, but I found the Ironclad much more similar to the SWs dreads. Jorin Helm-splitter
The old metal dreadnoughts were pretty tiny. The space wolf dread is the same size as the base kit. Leviathans, Contempors, and Redemptors are bigger than the base kit. NovemberIX
I can't speak to the more recent SW kits but the standard 'Nought, the Venerable, the Ironclad and the Furioso are all the same size, and parts and weapons are interchangeable. killersquid
From what I've seen, the box dreads are all roughly the same size. The space wolves dread has some different posing which can make it seem bigger. I have a classic pewter space wolves dread, and it's the same size as the current plastic kit. Bloody Legionnaire
I'm a fairly seasoned player. Been in the game since 2012. I'm well aware all the components are interchangeable. Something about the proportions of the base model dread look off to my eye.. at least through images. As I've stated, it could be the BA dreads and the Ironclad are on a raised base which gives them a more imposing look than the base model dread. Still, something about the armor looks off to me, I'm not sure what it is. BrainFireBob
The legs. Extended legs look fine. Wasn't and issue until the Contenptor came out, and the redemptor- which is a boxnaught+- cinched it Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372657-legacy-dreadnought-kit-size-creep/#findComment-5773754 Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
The Venerable and Ironclad have additional armour that is glued on, giving off more imposing vibes, but the base dread is the same kit and proportions (at the height of my collection, I had six standard dread kits, four AoBR dreads, three Ironclads, two plastic Venerables, and the FW Ultramarines one, so plenty of experience with all the kits). Captain Idaho
I believe the Assault on Black Reach Dreadnought that came eith it was very "square" and might even be a little smaller? TwinOcted
I believe the Assault on Black Reach Dreadnought that came eith it was very "square" and might even be a little smaller? The AoBR dread had shorter exhaust pipes, which didn't poke over the top of the body. This made it look shorter and more square. Dark Shepherd
SW dread is same size for sure, I kitbashed a 5th ed? launch box dread into a SW one with spare parts from SW kit As said above SW has posing but bigger arms with shields and axes (plus furs and totems) that make it look bigger Redemptor is arguably too big but IMO the pot belly on it is way off Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372657-legacy-dreadnought-kit-size-creep/#findComment-5773778 Share on other sites
Tokugawa
Redemptor is not really "too" big. The base size of it, is. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372657-legacy-dreadnought-kit-size-creep/#findComment-5774869 Share on other sites
Doghouse
The Castaferrum MKIV and MKV as far as I remember were retconned to be smaller than the Contemptor with the FW Heresy books. The idea being that the design was made for boarding actions and zone mortalis interiors where the Contemptor's size worked against it. It stands about 3.7 metres, which not that much bigger than a marine, maybe twice the height with the marine coming up to the hip. I think this was purely on Forgeworld's part to explain why the aging design was so small. The problem there is that 40k vehicles in general are not really to scale, you can actually see the intended sizes in the 4th edition Space Marine codex and I believe the dreadnought size comparison is in the 3rd edition rulebook. I personally think they should be huge towering mausoleums that house the remains of some of the Imperium's greatest warriors. I also think that is why they gave it regular wounds rather than a degrading wounds system because characters that are now knocking about that are not much smaller.
