I voted for the Bladeguard Veterans. I don't know why people don't rave about them more - they are some of the most impressive Veteran Astartes I could have imagined.

Mostly because I'm just tired of Marines in general. Bladeguard Veterans are awesome models and absolutely perfect for what I wanted to do with my army so naturally I got the Indomitus Box when it came out, but I really just don't want to see anything Marine anymore at the moment.

Agreed. With such well established design elements dictating a lot of how every Marine has to look, an Astartes model needs to be really special to even get close to the design work that's going on in other ranges.

Bladeguard are definitely nice models and I bought a bunch, but "nice for a Space Marine" and "best of the year" are a long way apart. To be honest I don't even think they're the best "Veteran Astartes" unit of the year, which I'd give to Sword Brethren.

Opinions eh!

I went with the new Ork Kommandos. I've been finding some of GW's modern output tending to over-detailed/over-the-top (especially the centre-pieces) and a bit "sterile" - the Kommandos have tonnes of character, and are well-detailed without any of it seeming superfluous or "over the top".

As someone who generally prefers the low-fantasy of The Old World to the sci-fi of 40k and high-fantasy of Age of Sigmar, the ven Densts, skeletons, and Cursed City models were right up there for me ... as were the Aeronautica Imperialis Space Marines and Eldar.

Be'lakor took first place, followed by Duinclaw and Helbrecht in second and third place respectively.

If anyone was surprised by these please raise your hand.

Anyone there at the back? No?

Alright.

I don't want an age of sigmar model to win for the sake of an age of sigmar model winning. That's equity not equality, if they want that they should have two separate polls then.

They should be 2 polls anyway, or AoS is never gonna get a look in just through sheer popularity differences (bar meme votes like the crab). I also don’t think an AoS model winning is just ‘for the sake of it’ either, AoS has a lot of excellent models and a lot of creativity that I think 40k is missing atm.

Be'lakor winning does mark the first time that a dual-system model has won as well - admittedly, it would be nice to see an exclusively Age of Sigmar kit win next year.

Yeah, a lot of the AoS models are real contenders for best mini of the year. In any case, I'm curious to see where GW goes next year.

Never said an AoS model winning would only be "for the sake of it", only saying I don't want one to win because it is an AoS model and one hasn't won yet. If an AoS model wins it should be out of merit, not out of a lack of representation. Edited by Putrid Choir

I’m pretty sure Joe wasn’t suggesting one should just win because it’s an AoS model.

Really? Because that's how it reads to me:

We don't even know what the models are for next year, he's saying he hopes an AoS one wins. What if the 40k ones are all great and the AoS ones are all flops? That's AoS winning for the sake of it being AoS.

Yes I’m sure it’s very likely that there will be no AoS models worthy of being mini of the year next year, none at all.

It’s fairly obvious what they meant.

I'd appreciate it if you didn't put words in my mouth, Putrid. As for whether or not the models next year are all "flops" that's entirely subjective - there's many models that have been released over the course of this year that I wasn't particularly fond of that made it onto the article either as special mentions, or as a contender for winning. Notably Morvenn Vahl, Helbrecht and the bloody crab.

Be'lakor made a solid win as a nice centerpiece model.

As for the game system, I thought some of the honorable mentions from AoS (Sigvald, Lord Kroak) were much better than Helbrecht at 3rd place for instance.

Meme or not the krab did take #2. Thats pretty much the collective AoS community coming together right there

It probaby helped that Warhammer Community themselves were meme'ing people to vote for him on a regular basis.

Didn't mean to put words in your mouth Joe, sorry. Literally hit the quote button using your exact words then prefaced it with that's how it read to me. Also prefaced the example of the flops with "what if", not "they will be". My original statements never mentioned you or quoted you, fire golem inferred that I thought you meant that and I stated that's how it read to me.

The crab placing second (and WHC encouraging people to vote for it) undermines the whole exercise for me. Is it a cool, fun mini? Sure. But it shouldn't be anywhere near the top of a best minis of the year list, it's not even the best Underworlds mini of the year.

Be'lakor is a worthy winner though, so there's that I guess.

The Crab winning second place proves the Reddit and 40K community have an outsized influence on what is considered a ‘good’ model. Glad Be’Lakor won overall. That would’ve been truly ridiculous if the crab beat one of the best miniatures ever made by any company.

Sad the Kommandos didn’t even get a mention, it’s such a great kit and makes the new Boyz kit look pathetic in comparison.

They were kind of mentioned:

"The latest edition of Kill Team launched with a boxed set packed with new miniatures. The Death Korps of Krieg models edged out the Ork Kommandos in the voting, and we can’t blame you – who can resist carrying a shovel to war?"
