With the Legions being such large organisations, its not uncommon for certain chapters or companies within them to sport unique colour schemes - think for instance of the Templars in the Imperial Fists. Perhaps you could create a company of the Sons of Horus which kept the Luna Wolves' white for most of their armour, with the teal used for just the shoulder pads for example?

The Sons of Horus first company (Abaddon's) wear black and red, riffing on this would also be a possibility.

I personally recommend going with the Legion whose lore you find most interesting, because the lore motivates me more than the painting and the playing, but your mileage may vary :)

edit: whoops, I'm not in the AT sub haha. Wrote a whole thing on Titan Legions... Ah well. ON TOPIC:

By World Eaters scheme, you mean the cobalt blue, white and brass? Or the later heresy schemes where red starts creeping in until it dominates? And can I ask, what attracts you to the background of the Sons of Horus, and what puts you off from the World Eaters?

I'd definitely second recommending a look at the Sons of Horus 1st company schemes. That company includes the Catulan Reavers, who share the black/red look of the Justaerin but could more readily fill out a larger force of reavers. The Sons of Horus also experience a shift over the Heresy where more blingy gold and black creeps in over the sea green, so that could be an option. There's also a ton of ways to do the sea green, from a pale mint to something closer to a dark angels green, that could make the colors work for you.

Another option might be to look into Traitor-leaning/World Eater blackshields who have broken away from Angron but still pursue Traitor-aligned objectives, or simply their own. Endryd Haar is sort of a Loyalist version of this concept.

And if there are things you don't like about a Legion's background, keep in mind that Legions weren't homogenous entities. While there were marked tendencies that defined the average marine of those Legions, there are also still tons of exceptions who don't quite fit the mold of their own Legion as cleanly. So maybe a force of World Eaters who buck the trends that you don't like in their lore and think a little differently.

For example: what about a group of World Eaters that Angron doesn't respect, so he sends them off on some assignment (pointless, suicidal, or anywhere in-between) expecting to never see them again. They're on the Traitor side but operating away from the body of their Legion and their Primarch, and set their own course through the conflict?

I agree that Sons of Horus give you probably the most flexibility when it comes to colours, as really you can do white or gray as Luna Wolves, a lot of different shade can be used as Sons of Horus – folks can be found painting them very green or rather greyish green, pale green, mint, or even more blue than green really like teal and you can always add units clad in black. Plus you always have some creative liberty so can paint bits of armour, like gauntlets, pads etc in a way you see fit if you can create a lore explanation.

Are you adamant on traitor legion or just traitors in general? If you like Eaters scheme then maybe White Scars have kinda a similar one (barring blue but Eaters also tend to have a lot of red especially later on, dunno what scheme did you envision for them, as the Eaters I think initially were mostly blue and white [still as War Hounds] but then you see less and less blue, in the end giving way completely to blood red), yet the lore is completely different and they were in general good pals with Sons of Horus that you like. You could even paint your force as you would White Scars and add a bit, say like an eye of horus, and proclaim them as Traitors that switched allegiance and just roll with SoH now.

30k really lets you be creative. If your force was somehow detached from the the legion/shunned by the rest/garissoned, it's really not that surprising to see them change their paint scheme a bit. From what I know Ultramarines as an example had such a chapter - Nemesis - which specialized in unconventional weapons (they usually kept their distance from the main force) and their armour was black and midnight blue. So I agree with Doctor Perils, pick a legion you like then you can worry about colour - you don't have to paint everyone in their mainstream paint scheme.

Always go with the scheme you like if you want a painted army, its never gonna work right if you dont enjoy it.

The fluff is typically more flexible anyway, World Eaters recruited from all over so a gang based culture is easy enough, and decapitation strikes are pretty solidly in their wheelhouse too. The Nails were popular enough but not really universal until the end, especially if away from Angron or lead by a charismatic leader who is anti them. Without you being specific is hard to be more helpful.
