Ahzek451
Would walk by the warhammer section at my local comic shop around late 2nd ed. Nothing but pewter blister packs on the wall. To a young'n it was not inspiring to look at. And they didn't really stock codex books to peruse. But a friend got me the old pewter lord of change. I geuss this is maybe when I got into it. But I didn't fully invest until a friend brought the new and shiny 3rd edition rulebook on the schoolbus one day and I drooled at all the pretty pictures. Fell in love as soon as I saw chaos marines and was 100% hooked when the first pewter necrons came out. Thousand sons and Necrons 4 life. Vassakov
I ended up starting with the Lord of the Rings games, back when the trilogy was in cinemas. 20 years ago. Russ' hide, that makes me feel old, even if I am but a stripling compared to many in this thread. White Dwarf introduced me to 40k, then some friends got me the 3rd Ed Space Wolves Supplement and now I'm converting my loft into a hobby room. Funny old world. Tawnis
So we're in agreement they need to do a new Heroquest and Space Crusade style boardgame? And not just something only available in an American bookshop Hasbro just re-released Hero Quest actually. The OG game, Keller's Keep, Return of the Witch Lord, as well as three brand new expansions: The Prophecy of Telor, The Spirit Queen's Torment, and The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness. New Dragon enemy, three new Heroes, the Druid, the Bard, and the Warlock, some new weapons and spells. New sculpts for everything including the furniture; not GW quality, but pretty decent since I got all that for only $150.00. It was implied at the end of the final new quest book that there would be more, but who knows if that will actually be the case or not. There were some minor changes due to copyright. Everything Chaos became Dread instead. Fimir's became Abominations, and while the new fishy people lovecraftian design is cool, I always had a soft spot for the Fimir's being the one really unique enemy in HQ. Still, that's about it for the changes. I've been playing them with my four and five year old kids as well as friends nostalgic for the original. We're all loving it. Axineton
So we're in agreement they need to do a new Heroquest and Space Crusade style boardgame? And not just something only available in an American bookshop I don’t think GW own the rights to Space Crusade anymore. Could be wrong but I did read something a few years back but can’t remember where regarding this. It was a long time ago so sad but not surprised if that lapsed Heroquest is back via kickstarter I think, not sure if even Hasbro still attached? Yeah I missed the Kickstarter last year but I’ve preordered the base game on Amazon and it’s out next week plus I preordered kellers keep and the return of the witch king at goblin gaming and they’re out next week too I believe. Iron Sapper
It was in 1997/1998 when I was stationed in Korea. My roommate was into it and we played games of Necromunda. He had some Space Marines laying around and when I saw the old metal Space Wolf Teminators, I was hooked. I sometimes wish I never had that roommate, I would have so much more money. Firedrake Cordova
HeroQuest is actually coming back out via Hasbro & Avalon Hill (you can get it in the U.S. off Hasbro Pulse right now, not sure how long it will take to ship) It's out for a general retail release this month in a few regions, including the US and Europe :) As Tawnis said, there's a few minor changes to de-GWify it, and it's using the US version of the rules (which fix a few issues with the original UK version of the rules). It'd be interesting to see if a Space Crusade re-work were in the works, although I think the limited scope of the original release, and being too tied to the GW IP (due to the Space Marines) might make it somewhat harder. Hfran Morkai
Early in Seconday School we had a trial of finishing early academically on a Wednesday but had to take an "enrichment" choice. My best friends went with tabletop wargaming so I also chose that. Picked up some Pathfinders and had a blast in my first game. Must've been mid 4th Edition. Shovellovin
I was introduced to the hobby when I went to a local model shop. My brother and I were looking for D&D miniatures when we spotted the RTB01 box set. We decided to split the box; we had no idea what 40K was. I think this may have been around 1992 or 1993. I painted up some of the marines and then lost interest. Fast forward to 1995, I got a job at a game store that carried Warhammer miniatures. After talking to a coworker, I bought the 2nd edition starter box. I made some friends with some guys that shopped at the store and ended up playing some games with them. i took an almost 20 year hiatus before returning to the hobby. Scribe
See similar to most. During those early days of Magic, Battletech, and HeroQuest a friend gave me what I seem to think was a sales advert for Space Wolves, it looked cool enough, but I had other hobbies, sports, and girls on my mind. The fact my family wasn't well off also killed any chance. Fast forward, I'm 18, I've got my first full time job, and I'm making what I ignorantly assume is massive amounts of cash. 3rd Edition dropped, and a Pile of Shame was born. Blood Angels, and then with 3.5, the righteousness of Khorne, pulled me in. I wish this place had polls, so we could get some metrics... Valkia the Bloody
It's my dad's fault. As a kid, he collected some historical miniatures and he took me to the German tin figure museum (where there are HUGE colourful historical armies, some with thousands of men, re-enacting historical battles). I was hooked. I dabbled with historical figures that my dad gave me to play with and paint for a long time. But I soon found out I was more into fantasy and science fiction. I started with Games Workshop miniatures around 1998, my very first army was a Fantasy Empire army (historical knights and Landsknechts). Soon to be followed by Dogs of War, Lord of the Rings Elves and Uruk-Hai. Since then, I think I have had 13 armies, all of them assembled and painted and most of them tested in tournaments. By now, most of these armies also have been sold again, although all the old Empire and Dogs of War stuff will still sit under a pile of dust in my parent's attic. Noserenda
Always interesting to see these, surprised we arent seeing more LoTR partwork kids though, that was definitely the heroquest/space crusade pipeline of the era!Which is how i was in, older brother got space crusade, which was the BEST THING EVER for my tiny little mind, then spotted a White dwarf in the wild, recognised the art even if the contents was mystifying and picked up odd ones when i saw them. Then they launched the first Space wolf minis and as a kid into Space marines, Vikings and Wolves i was dooooomed :D Valkia the Bloody and WrathOfTheLion 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/372855-how-did-you-get-into-the-hobby-and-when/page/2/#findComment-5781200 Share on other sites

AenarIT
I was 9 yo and my best friend at the time had an older brother who started WHFB. So we both got into it as well. My friend with Dark Elves, myself with the High Elves for peak rivalries and epic battles. I think it was during 5th ed of WHFB. I know I played through 6th as well up until the launch of 7th ed. Then life happened and when I got back WHFB was no more. I sold my Elves on eBay and got into 40K with Tau. Inquisitor Eisenhorn
I was probably 11 or 12 and was spending the week with my best friend's family at a vacation cabin. He had the 2nd edition 40k box and a bunch of eldar and dark angels stuff, and we played a few games, and since my friend hadn't really painted or assembled anything, I really wanted to get some and try my hand at it. I told my dad about the game and he was uncharacteristically impressed and supportive when he saw the metal models, so he got me the 2nd edition box. But then he was bummed out when he realized that he had bought me a bunch of plastic and not metal, so he sort of lost interest, but I kept with it and built and painted a bunch and even put together a terrain table from a piece of scrap wood from a construction site by my house. Then I took a break for about 15 years and came back in my 30s. Probably the most common story on this board. Yep, when we moved our family to the coast, my wife booted me out eventually 'go make some friends!' and that game group in my late 20s/early 30s kept me going in the hobby for a long time. Reldn
I was around 17-18 and saw an ad for Dawn of War back in 2004. It caught my interest and I picked it up when it released. Shortly after that I started voraciously digging into the lore and started a small Thousand Sons army. Sadly, having nobody nearby to play against, I gave up on the hobby aspect and just stuck with the fluff side of 40k. I've been in and out of the hobby side of things ever since then. Regretfully, certain fluff regarding two of my (once)favorite chapters caused me to completely abandon two of my projects in disgust. Been on a major hiatus from everything 30/40k for the past three or so years and only just now coming back into the fold. Brother Captain Vakarian
I started out with WHFB in 2000, I was all of 10 and my uncle and cousin introduced me not too long after 6th edition started. Played 6th and 7th edition WHFB almost exclusively for many years although I picked up Blood Angels and Demonhunters (mainly Grey Knights) for a bit in 4th edition 40K. Took a break starting around 2008 when I joined the Air Force and started back up again with 8th edition WHFB in 2015 or so. Promptly ragequit when GW axed Fantasy for AoS, although I stayed with the hobby and dabbled in Mantic offerings before falling in love with Infinity. Finally got pulled back into the GW orbit after AoS 2.0 and a lot of the fluff and rules updates there. Then saw the Indomitus preview and it was all over, jumped into 9th edition 40K and haven’t looked back. Crusade is probably my favorite way to play a tabletop game, ever, so massive kudos to GW for the steps they took in 9th. I love it, any issues aside. Could be my “forever” edition if 10th doesn’t expand on Crusade. Warsmith Aznable
Grew up playing 2E AD&D, quit when I joined the army. After I got out (and got divorced) I met a guy who invited me to play 4E D&D. I had no books or dice any more, so I visited a very good game shop. There was a HUGE section of 40k stuff and I had never seen anything like it. I mentioned it to one of the guys I was now gaming with, and he said he used to play. Every time I went to that store for D&D stuff I kept eyeballing the 40k minis. The 4th edition Chaos Space Marine codex was intensely interesting to me. Eventually I ended up opening it and staring at it. Next thing I know I'm buying it and a one of those old three figure push fit boxes "since I needed to practice painting" for my D&D character mini. I sometimes miss 5th edition. Simple times, simple fun.
