Hi all.

Although this is hardly a new precedent for GW (imperial knights for example) we have seen a lot of ‘upgrade’ sprues appearing for older kits and new kits alike. Recent examples of older kits having upgrade frames incorporated include the tau pathfinders and cadians, with the sisters novitiates being a new unit with the upgrade frame incorporated.

These are all quite different examples, with the cadians being a general release for existing options, pathfinders still being generally available without the frame without 40k rules (yet) and the novitiates being only available in kill team with 40k rules without the kill team extras.

I wonder if we will see these kill team upgrades become available as separate purchases outside the core kits once they get individual releases or if they will remain available in the starter sets. They could even simply release the whole kits including upgrades but without 40k rules seems unlikely.

For a while I wondered if they would do the same for guardians that they did for cadians (ie new upgrade frame for storm guardian bits but keeping existing guardian sprues) but thankfully they gave them new kits.

With a new kill team set every few months and rumours of certain eldar units being available in them i think it’s interesting to see which route they go down with this pattern of releases.

Edit: the dkok and ork kommandos further complicate things as the dkok are effectively all the non heavy weapon options available to guard in the codex and the kommandos got given all the extra options from kill team in their 40K profile (and were integral on the sprues rather than Seperate I believe)

A I understand it, the Kill Teams which originally came in vs boxes (Krieg, Kommandos, Novitiates, Upgraded Pathfinders) will be released as individual Kill teams, not put into 40k boxes (at least not right away). What this would means is that those boxes would have to include both upgrade sprues and the special rules they get as expanded Kill Teams.

I certainly HOPE this is how it will work. I couldn't afford Chalnath at the time, but I want to play using all the Novitiate rules once the Novitiate box is available. I'm very curious about the upgrades available to their base of operations in particular, as I tend to translate that stuff into scenery projects.

40k rules for Novitiates have actually appeared for download, and they don't include any of the special equipment, but so far the expanded KT rules are locked in the Chalnath box.
