Have to admit I wasn't expecting GW to release these for free, but glad they have done!

The extra Fighting Styles rule for the Captain sure looks spicy, although feels a bit like a shoe-in to justify the second powerfist!

So it isn’t defaulted to a master crafted one anymore - that’s actually a nerf as now he will need special issue wargear to make the sword particularly useful, also mad as the sword looks so fancy

Good catch, I hadn't spotted that sneaky nerf to the sword!

Agreed; the whole system seems to exist purely to give you a reason to take the Power Fist.

I feel like I am paying an extra 5 pts to get very little. You choose between chainsword, power sword, power fist and some extra attacks or appropriate relic and lose a Master-Crafted Power Sword.

I am more confused about this than anything.

At least White Scars can get a blender lord here, 11-13 attacks on the charge with a Chainsword.

I actually think this is a good change. It makes the Gravis Captain with Heavy Bolt Rifle and MC Power Sword more compelling.

Extra AP on the boltstorm gauntlets shooting. I really hope this is a sign for things to come. I want my boltstorm aggressors usable again!

Actually the rules make sense. With the MC power sword, the boltstorm gauntlet melee did kinda feel meh. So nerfing it kinda makes sense. As well as the rule, because more weapons, more attacks :D But that 5 point bump was really uncalled for.

So does this datasheet replace the one in Codex Space Marines, or is it extra? is the Master crafted Power sword on the other sheet because as it's master crafted you don't get the fighting style or did they just forget it was master crafted?

I'll take 5 attacks at damage 2 over 7 attacks at damage 1 on the Powersword profile by choice.

Can this indicate that there will not be a Codex 2.0 this edition since the datasheets have been released for free?

I think it looks almost certain now.

This could be a taste and indication that units will be reworked with some more thematic rules and abilities.

I'm hoping that some of the abilities that were taken away from units like the Grav Tanks are restored, to one again make them more dynamic and interesting.

Either way, this is a great start.

It sure would be nice to have some beta rules...

To check I'm reading this correctly, an otherwise un-buffed Captain, on the charge, would be able to make the following numbers of attacks (boltstorm gauntlet attacks lumped in with PF for simplicity given they're identical profiles)?

  • Equipped with boltstorm gauntlet and chainsword: 9 attacks, 3 of which must be CS, other 6 can be CS or PF.
  • Equipped with boltstorm gauntlet and power sword: 8 attacks, 2 of which must be PS, other 6 can be PS or PF.
  • Equipped with boltstorm gauntlet and chainsword: 7 attacks, all PF profile.

This just feels kinda weird?

For one, there are two generic unnamed gravis captains now. Is this one the only guy who has mastered the art of fighting in his gravis armor but the heavy Intercessor version doesn’t know yet?

Two, when I think of “the art of fighting in gravis armor” I don’t picture a dude making 10 lightning fast attacks. This buff just feels strange from a theme perspective over something like increased strength on the charge or ap or really anything else? Hitting on full WS on the fist or anything?

Lastly the restriction on relic feels like it has to exist (teeth of terra with 12 attacks would be brutal) but it definitely seems like a weird restriction. Again, he’s mastered the fight style of the armor unless he has a fancy older chainsword instead of a normal one? Master crafted power sword to normal is also a noteworthy change. From a rules perspective does giving special issue Wargear to make it master crafted again count as a relic? Not too sure on that one

This is getting really silly now.

This is a great example of where GW had gone wrong. They've created yet another model with unique special rules because they've created such an excessive surplus of redundant choices and have to try and make this one relevant. This model just doesn't cut it compared to a Firstborn Captain with better mobility options or a cheaper transport or can teleport,, who can have Relics (example Teeth of Terra having better strength and damage than a mere Chainsword and the same amount of additional attacks) or Thunder Hammers that make their offensive performance superior to this model. And that's even with the additional rules. Likewise, the Primaris sniper Captains or Primaris Captain with Relic Shield are just more survivable

I'm afraid it's another case of "an answer to a question no one asked" with GW.

The attack buff is a bit bizarre to me. It may make it better, but the reasoning is completely ridiculous to me.

It's just a raw power buff, maybe to account for losing the better sword, all the justification of why the ability is there is nonsense.
