I try to make my Primaris kill teams look as characterful and blinged up as Kill Team Cassius. Each time they release a new chapter specific model, I add that to the collection. The special BA, SW, and DA Lieutenants for example, along with Uriel Ventris, Lazarus, Blackmane, and Khan are all bases for conversions. Sword Brethren and Crusaders from the recent Black Templar releases are on my list to kitbash into Deathwatch Vets. Hell, I'm even working on mixing in Tor Garadon's model with Feirros for some Gravis Kill Team representation.

Those are great ideas. I see both sides of the coin and it makes me wonder how to best model kill teams. i am working on a idea of a black shield kill team and instead of having no iconography they have a squad symbol to pick them out from other kill teams

Chapter pad plus at least one thing that ties the model to that Chapter. For example my Ultramarines Hellblaster has a helmet crest and my Salamanders Veteran wields an Infernus Heavy Bolter and has a gasmask.

For Blackshields, if you pick a background for them you can use bitz to work that into the model. Mine, for example, is a disgraced hunter who wears an animal pelt over his pauldron and carries a few Xenos skulls on his belt. Who he was doesn't matter, only the hunt matters now.

Honestly, the best way to model kill teams is the way you prefer - it's your collection after all and it's all valid. I do like your black shield idea. I think I'll do that for a Kill team built around big game hunters, with trophies of all their kills.

It´s really in your hands here, Official rulebooks of Deathwatch RPG show marines with little bling and alot of bling. My opinion is to have something in common form chapter where they come from. Maybe characters have some more chapter specific bling on them?

I think it depends on the character of the individual marine, as well as their experience prior to, and during, their vigil.

A former Terminator, a champion of his Chapter, and slayer of countless enemy warlords, witches and demagogues may well take pride in the accolades his Chapter has presented him with, or reject them as merely trinkets gathered along the righteous path he walks. It could change depending on the symbol or icon presented.

A Blood Angel awarded a handful of teardrop shaped bloodstone for slaying a number of Carnifexes with his Inferno Pistol may hold them in higher regard than the Angel's wing awarded later in his career, but not his Marksman's honours he achieved as a Scout. I think determining the nature of the Marine is a good start.
