Doobles57
So I'm currently building a 30K Death Guard army and would ideally like to be able to use as much of it as possible in 40K games. I was wondering if anyone does anything similar and which rules you run? I know some legions will cross over relatively easily, but DG seem trickier. The 40K DG codex is very nurgley and doesn't really fit with the 30k units or their look much. The Chaos codex has some nice touches like 20 man marine units to mirror the 30k army, but there's a lot of demonic stuff in there too. Which leaves me with considering the main Marine codex. Obviously nothing Primaris etc would be used. Considering the successor tactics of indomitable (auto pass attrition tests) and stalwart (can't be wounded on a 1 or 2) as fluffy rules for the pre heresy DG. Would anyone have an issue with such an army using such rules? Or is there a better option? Orange Knight
You can use them easily enough, but they'll be a loyalist Principia Astartes force in terms of rules. That's the closest analogue. Lord Marshal
The Mortifactors Chapter are practically the Heresy Death Guard scheme. You could probably get away with either running them as such, or another Successor Chapter with a similar scheme. WrathOfTheLion
I would think running them as a Space Marine successor chapter would work fine. I haven't really done that for Loyalist Space Marines so I have less experience there, but I have run parts of my 30k Word Bearers in games of 40k (as Word Bearers of course). Yeah some legions transfer to 40K pretty easily. DG seem one of the trickier just to how much they changed post heresy. The standard loyalist marine codex seems to fit their organisation and units best, but with a DG codex and a traitor codex existing I wouldn't want to appear "gamey". You might also check out the new Chaos Space Marine codex when that comes out, see what's there. Running them as a Renegade or something like that might be the most 'thematic', but we'd have to see whether the book has the support to at least make that playable. True, I'm interested to see how that codex comes out. Chaos Marines to seem to have been heading more chaos/demonic rather than just normal Marines with spikes (rightly so) but there could well be some nice fluffy options in there. Tokugawa
Chaos Marines go more daemonic/mutated and loyalists go more tacticool. "No country for old men", brother. If you play WYSIWYG your games will be rather difficult. lansalt
What 30k DG models do you have or plan to get? With a bit of clever thinking, swapping models when needed, and magnets, you could have a viable force for 30k, 40k marines, and 40k DG. For DG, there are interesting modelling opportunities. For example, you could proxy a PBC with a Morbus heavy bombard, or use a Grave Warden with axe as the blight launcher guy in a Blightlord squad. The terminator Deathwing Knights kit comes with a flail that could be used also for non-warped Blighlords. Plenty of Bolter tacticals, couple of dreads, terminators then some artillery. I like those ideas though - especially the Morbus heavy bombard - really like that model. lansalt 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/373127-30k-marine-armies-in-40k/#findComment-5791538 Share on other sites
lansalt
Don't forget also the incoming new CSM codex as another way to use 30k models. There's talk of custom warband rules like loyalist chapters. And unless GW deletes their current options, the Chosen datasheet can be used for several 30k units like tactical support squads/veterans/seekers. The exalted champion, master of executions, dark apostle and warsmith are also ways to proxy 30k praetors/consuls. You'd also keep access to assault marines (raptors), heavy support squads (havocs), and bikes.
