Described selection on a world that supplies recruits to the Dark Angels? And how the ones that didn't pass the initial suitability scan they gave the option of killing them because it would bring so much shame to the family to be rejected?

Thanks.

Angels of Darkness or Deathwing short story.

The killing yourself so you dont shame your family doesnt sound like Deathwing. Has been a few years since I read it but that doesnt ring any bells. Not read much else from the Dark Angels, read the first two heresy novels with them in but I dont remember much about those as I only read them once and they didnt exactly knock my socks off.

Im curious to know what story its from now..

I checked the book and forgot to update! Sorry.

I'm convinced it is AoD that you're thinking of.

Boreas oversees a series of trials in front of the tribe. Feats of strength and speed, culminating in a free-for-all fight. Aspirants are eliminated at each stage but there's no indication that they don't just go back to their life. Three aspirants are taken into a cave for analysis by the apothecary. One loses his nerve and Boreas tells him he can go home in dishonour where he he will be shunned by his tribe, or he can die and nobody will ever know he failed. One broken neck later the two surviving aspirants are taken to serve the Emperor.

This brother! ^
