The meta sucks right now.

 

You either use the cheese or get steamrolled.

 

I experimented with Custodes myself but it was not fun or satisfying when winning. I won Season 5 Pod 1 in a custodes mirror match and the victory was like tasting ash. Yay I rolled more 4s than you...good game

 

I've been playing Elden ring more than 40k lately.

 

However I got lucky and was able to get an entire pod of players to enter an honor/ethics code for a pod/RTT

 

No tau/custodes/clowns/crusher stampede allowed

Aeldari ok but no more than 2 D cannons

 

Everyone was excited to bring out their other armies

 

I was happy to bust out my SW

 

I have been experimenting with all kinds of things like wolf spear with the black knife relic and different successor combos but this list won the nod.

 

I call it revenge of the smash lord!!!

I am going away from double exploding 6s and using +1 to charge/advance

I am shifting from jump WG to Wulfen/Wulfen Dreads as my preferred melee units

And since they can't benefit from a chaplain I got them a bonus with the successor trait instead

 

 

For the shooting I can kill big things or hordes

Eradicators are 10 melta shots with some big bonus damage if needed

LF1 are 9 melta and 4 grav with cherub option

LF2 are 20 grav with cherub option

 

I buff those guys with a support chaplain giving +1 to shoot and/or +1 to wound the closest target

Tons of T8 baddies out there need melting...and if I'm losing rerolls I need good basic rolls

 

I also bring the company ancient for psyops

In the past I discovered the threat of firing on death has influenced how my opponent plays

 

For melee I bring 3 wulfen...the fastest wulfen possible with my successor choice

They are joined by the smash lord...a MC TH for 4 damage and he gets +2 advance/charge due to successor and hunter stacking

With imperiums sword he has 6 TH and 1 LC on the attack (this is basically a custodes hero attack profile)

He hits at S9 on the charge and with savage strike will wound almost anything in the game on 2s

 

Then we have the utility units to score points and fill out the roster

The phobos detachment

Lt Reiver with lord of deceit for redeploy

2 incursors that can be deployed in my opponents face and pulled back if I lose the roll

infiltrator to keep rear safe from GSC and other tricks

2 speeder storms for objectives and positioning

Never seen a large rubric with flamers before...I don't like that and what it can do if I try to charge

I mirror his drop with incursors in my safe ruins

Infiltrators screen out my entire backfield and touch home objective

Wulfen1 and bodyguard are on far left flank to ruin to ruins and support incursors

Smash lord and Wulfen2 are ready to counter assault from my home objective

I place my reiver LT last and under the assumption I get 1st turn. I see a potential drop pod target that could benefit from his reroll wounds aura

I move up and consolidate the left flank

Wulfen and company vets advance

Incursors fall back to zone out the corner

Top flank I move the sacrificial incursors up to hopefully bait his rubrics into LOS where I can shoot them

They did their job and got me a RND and engage for the turn

My infiltrators spend all game except turn 5 doing the mission specific secondary

DP ahoy!

Chaplain and Ancient hop out on the protected side of the wall but still give buffs to LF

I recitation of focus and keen senses to hit on 2s

I blast his rhino easily and split fire manages to kill the chaos spawn as well

Pop cherub on the grav and kill 2 rubrics that hopped out

His turn

He only kills 1 LF with spells before the DP is closest target

He shoots with termies and kills 2 more...I fail to activate on death

His small rubrics move forward and 1 charges into the DP and hopes to tag the LF after

I heroic 6" with chaplain and interfere with that plan...he drops me to 1 wound but I live

Bad news is those damn rubrics are obsec so he took my objective and scored stranglehold

Top flank his flamer rubrics burned the incursors to a crisp but they did expose themselves

Turn 2

I decide to take some BIG risks this turn

His characters have a single unit of termies giving them LOS and I can squeeze my eradicators to shoot them. If I kill 3 models I can blast his characters with the 3 surviving LFs near the chaplain

However...he gets to auspex with his damn terminators if I come in so it is risky...what do I do? FOR THE GLORY!!!! ATTACK!!!

I bring in the grav to shoot his flamer squad at EXTREME long range so he can't roast me in return

Chapter master jumps over to give them a reroll bubble

The LS touches the point and contests the objective to deny scoring hold more. It is face to face with a vortex beast and likely dead.

Left flank is where things go wild

Since I am exposing units all over I decide to flood him with targets. He can't kill everything right?

Both wulfen move forward....left flank needs to kill his obsec rubrics then slingshot forward

Middle wulfen have a 6" rerollable charge to the mid rubrics and can slingshot forward for engage points

Chaplain limps back behind the wall and out of LOS after buffing the LFs in the command phase

LF move forward hoping they get to shoot characters but plan B is shooting rubrics

Incursors do RND action

I lose 2 eradicators to auspex fire...DAMN. If I was smart I would have done the gravis armor strat but I totally forgot to improve their saves.

I still get 6 melta shots at BS3 with keen senses and the MM is within 12 so all shots have +2 damage

I only manage 3 wounds. He saves 1...NOOOOOOO

I then have to burn a CP for a wound roll b/c I rolled a 1 and he used the minus 1 damage strat...

Eradicators the gamble didn't pay off...on to plan B

Good news is he burned so much CP keeping his termies alive he can't do anything else

The grav guns blast 8/10 flamer rubrics...that was not likely if he did the -1 damage trick here

Time to do work in the charge phase....EVERYTHING makes it

Wulfen plow through his guys and slingshot to threaten his characters

His turn

He brings in his termies from DS and has a 5 on his fate dice...guaranteed charge coming up

He null zones the left most wulfen but otherwise has a bad psychic phase AND shooting phase

2 wulfen survive up top and 3 wulfen on the left....forces him to charge in which means I get to fight on death...YAY

I kill 2 terminators up top and his forward melee specialist sorceror on the left

His vortex beast easily snacks on the LS

He gets another stranglehold b/c his damn termies are obsec and hugging my DP again

Top flank

Chapter master advances and rolls a 6...he gets 20" of kamikaze berserk range and goes to smash the vortex beast

I bring in the wulfen to try an 8" charge to kill his objective holding flamer rubrics

I have to decide whether to guerilla tactics my incursors and try for RND or push forward and fight...I decide I need them to kill terminators and help the character blob

Characters all move up to fight rubrics as well...there are 3 on the point

Grav fangs have no target so advance forward

I make all charges EXCEPT the incursors...crap I needed them

I also am in danger b/c I don't have fight last tricks in this list

I activate the ancient first and hope to whittle down his terminators....I fail and kill 1 total

He interrupts with terminators and kills chaplain

To make up for the failure my reiver gets lucky and sneaks a wound through (he failed a 2+ save) to kill a terminator who had 1 wound remaining after the ancient put 2 damage on him

Smash lord easily crushes the vortex beast and hugs the LS for protection

Big news is the wulfen MAKE the charge and wipe his rubrics...this is huge

I get abhor points and drop him to 0 primary with this move (7 point swing)

His turn

His rear sorceror only manages to kill 4/5 wulfen with mortals

He pushes ahriman and 3 rubrics forward...they fail miserably shooting LF and I only lose 1

He charges everyone into the reaver LT...kills him easily then piles termies into Ancient

My ancient activates first and kills 1 of the smaller termies dropping it to a single model...he pulls out of combat from DP and stays near me

Bad news for him is I consolidate AWAY from him b/c his other termies are closer

He gets no combat activation and is free to shoot

Final news is my single wulfen passes morale!

Huge swing in the game here because now I hold more!

Turn 4

I get hold more and have great positioning

Ahriman and both terminators can be wiped out

Go for the kill!!!

I send the incursors and Smash Lord in

The smash lord advances and rolls a 5 to go 19" right in their face

Land speeder also comes to eat overwatch

Long fangs open fire on his 3 man terminators and he burns all his CP on defensive tricks

-1 damage and bodyguard rule to protect Ahriman

I kill 1 terminator only...but I also burn all his remaining CP so I'm fine

The incursors chuck a krak and into the solo terminator and kill him

The path to ahriman is open for their charge...I multi charge him and termies just in case

Smash does the same

LS comes in just for funsies

Incursors use savage strike (should have done executions but DUH moment)

I kill Ahriman

Smash Lord kills the 2 terminators

I now own about 2/3s of the map except for his top rows

His turn

He can't do much and falls back to hide

He does smite the solo wulfen and take over the top right objective again

I charge in with Smash Lord and LS to try and wipe his home objective

Everything else falls back and secures points

I have maxed my primary scoring so the infiltrators are free to do RND for 3/4

Smash Lord multi charges 3 units

1 TH in chaos spawn

3 TH and 1 LC into sorceror

2 TH into master of executions

Kills everyone except master of executions...he nailed both his 4++

His turn he smites the Smash Lord and manages to kill the speeder off

I enjoyed NOT playing the toxic meta for a change

This SW list is fun and effective. Not as spiky as the double exploding 6s and I felt the lack of fight last in 1 round of combat...but Smash Lord is fun to play

And I needed to have fun with the meta in the shape it is

That is a classy meta to create, especially with digital 40k where its not like you're excluding someone's well painted and loved army that just happens to be good now. Simply excluding the cheese. Gkad you found a pod with fun as tge focus instead of strait cheese spamming.

Especially with the wulfen i dont think you need the dubbele exploding sixes. Their hammers are usually allready pritty overkill if they make it into combat. There is no meta now which is the problem.

 

Play the S tier or dont bother.

 

We have a bigger play group now who want to play by these rules. Many of them were ready to just quit 40k.

I am hoping single explosion wulfen are lethal enough.

 

I did a ton of thinking on them...double 6 explosion needs reroll all hits to fish for and maximize explosions. Wulfen can never get that (unless facing TS/heretic astartes muwahaha).

 

I also saw many IH players take +1 hit and whirlwind (single exploding 6 not double like us). Those IH had plenty of melee.

 

My version may not spike as hard but i think i made the most reliable wulfen possible. They are the melee core of my army so i need consistency

 

I also have more CP here than my older lists. I am happy to use more tricks when the situation arises. keen senses on wulfen to hit on 2s for example combo with savage strike.

 

2s and 2s are as good as it gets without rerolls

Pregame & Deployment


The super lethal guns on his knights don't scare me. My belief in 40k is if you can see any of my models they are dead. The more you invest in offense the less I care...only indirect fire guns scare me.


I have decent walls to hide behind so I should be ok


His armigers will be a problem though


Obsec counting as 5 models can turn off my primary scoring very easily. I lost my last game against armiger spam because of this.

I end up with a very defensive deployment and use my infiltrators to bubble wrap the grav long fangs in case he makes a turn 1 charge

Actually does a good job zoning out my DP options


His big cerastus knight ends up in my DZ after an advance and uses FULL TILT

Incursors on left flank do RND

Infiltrators have done their job and use guerrila warfare to go into reserves


I buff the eradicators with chaplain and CM and they step back to shoot the cerastus knight through the 2nd story windows of the terrain


I also decide to be aggressive and push left flank wulfen1 up to attempt a charge...I don't want him to get hold more if I can avoid it


Wulfen2 moved up to charge the knight if it lives...always have a plan B in 40k


Eradicators fire

Full rerolls with +1 hit/wound

I decide not to use keen senses


I put 20 wounds on the knight. He used the 4++ strat and a CP to reroll a save to reduce damage


Wulfen2 charge in to finish the job. I talk intent with my opponent and he agrees I can swing then consolidate 6" back behind the wall


Wulfen1 fail the charge into warglaive (needed 7 failed both times)

He pushes out aggressively

His crusader erases the wulfen outside the wall


His warglaive charges the wulfen2 behind the wall

Warglaive only kills 1 wulfen (made 3/4 saves)

I kill him in return and consolidate out into the open

He explodes but I only take 1 wound on wulfen

Incursors take 2 wounds and lose a model...doh

I go all in and try to pick off as many armigers as I can

Wulfen2 push to hit the middle

Incursors on left advance onto the objective...this puts 4 OBSEC bodies on...1 more to contest is needed

Speeder hops onto the point

CM gives himself rerolls and advances to charge out from a wall



Wulfen3 on right flank push out to charge through terrain and hit a moirax

Eradicators move to pick off the other moirax trying to get in my back lines

LF drop in his back corner

Grav guns get +1 and put a few wounds on crusader while stepping out

LF drop in the back and have shots at his rear warglaive and left flank warglaives

I decide to erase him from the left flank and blast him off the objective


Eradicators wipe his moirax off the map

Grav guns put 6 wounds on crusader


I make all charges

Since I own the objective I send the LS in to charge and provide LOS after combat is over

CM gets savage strike to hit on 2s wound on 2s

I roll 2 1s to wound and fail to kill warglaive (he made 2 6+ saves)

He interrupts with middle warglaive and kills wulfen2

Wulfen2 swing on death and kill him back (nobody left alive in middle)

Wulfen3 kill moirax

His warglaive swings and only puts 3 damage on the CM

Had to spend a CP to save the CM there...was stressful!

He only has 3 knights left

Crusader kills Wulfen3 and speeder

He falls back from combat with CM and stands on middle with neardead warglaive

Rear warglaive goes to kill the LFs


I overwatch and land 2 wounds spending my last CP in the process

Decent damage and I kill the warglaive

I roll 2 1's for damage

It only kills 1 LF in melee

The old dogs manage to put 2 wounds on it in return and kill it!!!


The glory is added to their long saga

Eradictors get +1 and keen senses but I fail catechism of fire

They step out and shoot the crusader and finish it off

I had great walls to hide behind and if he tried to play cagey I could shoot him off objectives


Games like this are why I pack heavy eradicators + LF MM...they force my opponent into certain decision

Very happy with the firepower part of the list and I never got to use the ancient fire on death trick either


3 wulfen is fun b/c I can be more aggressive and not care if 1 dies


Long fangs had a moment for the sagas

Chapter master got embarassed though by failing to kill a warglaive

Maybe I need to sneak morkai bolts in the next version of this list just for him

My army is just a random experiment to see how different common units feel with the armor buff

I said goodbye to my friendly company vets and upgraded a wulfen to a WG unit for a little extra mobility


I also added a culexus to try and stop a maleceptor from dropping 24 MWs on me from out of LOS

I hope I don't have to play against eldar too soon. I really don't like the faith dice mechanics so I'm sure I will hate Fate dices too. Did you feel the loss of the Grav Devs in this list? I like suppressors but it doesn't look like they made that much of an impact...

I did miss my grav fangs.

 

In real life I own 0 grav guns (I'm assuming this is a common SW problem).

 

I had to find 100 points for the assassin so I made the cut there.

 

Was hoping for similar dakka but I'm not feeling these suppressors that strongly to be honest

 

They are cheap...and they jump....but that may not be enough to justify keeping them

That would be nice indeed. The -1 AP in the new AoC meta will hurt them a lot I think though.

 

I'm working on a Raven Guard list and I'm on the fence weather to follow a similar aggressive approach or try to play the evasive game with mobile long range units. Not sure if the AoC buff is enough to warrant a sit back and shoot list with marines of any kind...

I also win reploy roll off and make him redeploy first

He shifts his forward dread to safety


I pull the forward incursors back to my regular deployment just in case I need them to advance to the middle and provide an obsec bubble

I run 1 wolf to touch the middle and hide out of LOS


No real LOS for eradicators so my suppressors dink 2 damage on dread and thats about it


I raise 2 banners

Culexus walks forward and plants a bomb...if he survives to my turn thats 4 primary woo hoo

He shuffles conservatively


Shoots suppressors long range with telemon but fails to do any damage

Charges wolf with prosecutors and uses slingshot to get engage

Wolf survives with 1 wound and kills 1 in return

Prevents grind and earns oath

Turn 2

I fall back with the wolf and send him back out of LOS to try and prevent grind

Culexus walks onto the point to replace him

I just need to kill his prosecutors now

I decide to bring in LFs since his main dread force is so far back they can't really see or reach me

LFs drop in my backfield with barely LOS on his far left dread


They fail to kill his dread at long range with LFs

2 wounds rolled 10 for damage before damage reduction

He rolls 4++ and survives cherub shots


Forgot to move suppressors up as a plan B shooting


I am able to wipe out his sisters with grav LF and suppressors


Bad news is I get 0 oath points. I fell back with a wolf...failed to kill his dread...and culexus is not an adeptus astartes keyword

No shooting or fighting...just walks forward b/c no LOS

His dreads are approaching the middle but still can't get good LOS

This is good for him to avoid my guns but bad to take the middle

I have wulfen and WG that are safe from being shot that will just launch to the middle objective and slaughter what he puts there


His 2 wound dread tries planting a bomb...if I don't kill him he gets lots of points

He puts his blade champion on middle objective and steals it b/c he counts as 2 models

I don't want to commit to heavy to melee b/c he has dactarai 1" pile in active


I basically run out of LOS with everything and sacrifice a wulfen to kill the dread and stop his bomb...this will deny him primary AND earn me oath for killing a vehicle


Thanks to custodes nerf he doesn't have OBSEC on his character so I throw 2 wolves on the middle with assassin to take it back for stranglehold


I also send 1 incursor into guerilla since I am not doing anything

Dreads kill wulfen

Custodes infantry kill 1 wolf and maneuver to earn engage


He gets the middle and hasn't left me many targets

He did leave the wolf alive so I get full oath of moment


*forget to take SS here b/c I had to plan my response


Turn 4

I need to take the middle while also keeping my eradicators safe and away from his shooting


The incursors come in from guerilla and plant a bomb in his backfield

The infiltrators don't need to zone out his dread anymore so they go into guerilla to repeat the process on turn 5


I put the LS in the middle to get 3 bodies

I then put every gun I have into his 3 custodes infantry

He pops his defensive tricks and survives with 1/3 left

Eradicators killed 1

LF killed 1


CM has to charge in and he smashes the custodes down to secure stranglehold

SW victory!!!


Glad they nerfed custodes...b/c I always felt I had the upper hand against them in a fair fight

He did survive a TON of attacks b/c he popped his tricks 1 turn for his 3 man infantry.

The chapter master was able to clean up that mistake by going berserker mode with his TH for me. I got lucky with transhuman and 4++ save and landed the killing blow



We talk post game and he realizes his choice of auric mortalis on my eradicators let me deny him ANY points for that secondary. Once he decided to stay back and out of LOS I had no reason to put my eradicators at risk. They did their job deterring him and denied secondary points.


By playing conservative I ran away with secondary points in the game.

Just finished a match against Aeldari

Brutal...absolutely brutal

He built to make the eldritch storm combo (has like 5 farseer variants)

If it goes off it can do d3+5 MW on a 2+ to each non-infantry character in a 6" radius (that is a 12" diameter of DEATH)

If something was in LOS it was shredded by psyker and shuriken spam

If something was out of LOS it was hit by artillery

If it was huddled up it got the eldritch storm of death

I spread and tried to avoid the eldritch storm...just delayed my tabling by 1 turn

No point putting the time and effort into writing up a batrep...if you have questions I will try and answer them

Some silver linings

This game was unwinnable before it was played...so I just made 40 points my goal

Juuuust beat it

I rolled like absolute garbage all game. 1s and 2s

Turn 1 he had 4 shurikens on my chaplain and I failed all 4 to die

We laughed then tallied up my rolls during 1 streak

I failed 11/12 4+ rolls in one stretch (all the wulfen died after the chaplain)

So hopefully I got bad dice streak out of the way in an unwinnable game where it doesn't matter

Have you thought on swapping 1x long fang for a 1x hounds of morkai (attempt to mitigate pyskers)?

i dont like hounds of morkai personally...never take em

The culexus is cheaper and inflicts twice the penalty on psychic tests that Hounds do. It is probably tougher overall since it can only be hit on 6s.

i like the culexus in combo with my shooting on death LF/ancient combo

 

i sacrifice the assassin and stand him in front so no smites can go off at all on shooting units behind him

unfortunately the new aeldari is free targetting and insane MW output...
