I've got a 1000 point Thousand Sons army that I have been having a lot of fun with. After playing exclusively Space Wolves and World Eaters for the past 3 years its nice to have a psychic phase! My 1000pt army is 2 exalteds, 10 rubrics, 10 scarabs and 10 tzaangors.

I would like to expand up to 1500 points but I am totally burned out on painting rubrics/scarabs for now. I'm a slow painter and they are so ornate that it takes me forever. Any suggestions on the best non-rubric/scarab units to add to get me to 1500?

I do have an unassembled forge/mauler fiend but was thinking that would work better in my world eaters army.

you could go for something like a Daemon Prince, Magnus or a contemptor (with Volkites)

It also looks like we will be able to ally Chaos Knights with their new codex so that is another option.

I know its not super competitive at the moment but I find some daemons are a good break from painting the trim, hoping to give summoning a shot in my next game.

Yeah, I just play with a group of friends, we all want to win but nobody is showing up with the latest netlist.

Good call on the chaos knights, didnt consider that and I really like the new wardog models!

Something we all understand well, there's a price to be paid for such nice models :sweat: As Tich says your options are a bit limited if you want to escape a form of dust bunny. The Daemon Prince is getting on a bit but is still a nice kit and makes for a good figurehead for your forces (and has less trim too). I think Magnus is better as a final dish of sorts (this is my plan), but it does look like your list is missing larger models so maybe some vehicles could help fill this void for you?

Whatever you decide don't forget to let us know and share pictures :D

Some bigger models would be great fun a Dreadnoughts/Hellbrutes offer a lot to Sons. A Multimelta Hellbrute packs a lot of anti-tank and heavy melee potential into a pretty effective package. It has the -1 Damage rule, benefits from Armour of Contempt and has a 5++ in case it gets hit by really heavy firepower. Forgeworld Dreads such as the dual Volkite Contemptor are also strong contenders if you are happy to work with resin.

Daemon Princes or even Magnus also bring some heavy muscle to a list while still offering further Psychic support.

Spawn are cheap and fun and you can either run a couple individually to nab Objectives or drive a big blob of them up the centre as a distraction Carnifex.

Lastly a Knight also offers a great centrepiece model and the new Dreadblade rules means you can include one without violating your monofaction bonus. A Tyrant offers unparalleled firepower although the forthcoming Psychic Abominant would fit very well with Sons too.

I was wondering why the goonhammer guy was so down on thousand sons helbrutes. It seems to me that gaining the 5++ is a pretty big deal. To me the invuln is the main allure of the relic contemptor and thousand sons get it for free. I guess you miss out on the more exotic relic weapons like volkite but a 5 point multi-melta is nothing to sneeze at.

Not sure how old is article is, but I think the general sentiment is that overall the 5++ is a little less special now with the new armor of comtempt rule. many anti-amour weapons being at least ap3 just means a 5+ save anyway. Clearly still useful when you do run into ap4/5, but probability-wise not as much anymore.

That 5++ might just save your helbrute's bacon in either devastator or assault doctrine from marines.

The new nids are rocking a serious amount of heavy AP firepower too, so that's also a thing!

And don't forget anything melta tends to have AP-4.

I'd say the 5++ is still plenty useful with AoC!

Adding my vote to those calls for spawn and dreadnoughts/hellbrutes! All good, fun units for us now.

I think you could do with another unit of Rubrics, but no point doing that yet if you're burned out on them - maybe do 5 spawn then 5 rubrics, then the hell brute, then the remaining 5 to break them up a bit?

I do have another box of rubrics that I intend to get to eventually. Probably will build all with flamers as my first box was all bolters. But I think I need a break before I tackle them.

What about the vindicator, does anyone use them? I like the look of it and it seems really tough. The D6 shots is not ideal though.

I think that Armour of Contempt has given a clear boost to Vindicators at T8/2+ is quite a good profile now. It is not too expensive although I would consider the Siege Shield a mandatory upgrade.

Yes the firepower is swingy but if you roll high, it can dish out a lot of damage. Also removing it will require the same sort of firepower your opponent would probably like to direct at your Rubrics.

Always a fun model to paint, they look really good. If you're looking for good stuff to paint, then the vindi is up there, however in game they're so so, unless you want to invest CP's in rerolling bad amounts of shots.

I'm used to that. I've got 2 redemptors that only seem to know how to roll 1s and 2s for # of plasma shots.
