Greeting fellow Astartes,

Recently I've bought a Combat Patrol box to start playing again after 5 years absence.

I would like to paint them as Raptors so my questions is,

How do you play them?

Do i use Raven Guard rules? I have the Codex Astartes. Should i get Supplement Raven Guard?

I understand they're great marksmen, recon units and great specialists, like modern SF. I also belive they would work together greatly with my future Imperial Guard.

What pulled me is is the dry-cut, no fancy pants approach to combat. Getting the job done is priority.

I intend to exclusively use Primaris Marines as I like the look of them.

Thanks in advance!

You use the Successor Chapter Tactics rules, so you can either pick any two traits you want that best work with your vision of how the army works, or take the Inheritors of the Primarch successor trait which then lets you use the Raven Guard chapter tactics.

Regarding the supplement, you will be able to use stuff from it, but just be aware there is a lot of rumour/speculation that the supplements are going to be replaced before much longer (potentially even before the end of the year).

I haven't played with Raptors, but if I would I would play them as Raven Guard successors with successor traits:

- Whirlwind of Rage (6s to hit in close combat generate extra hits)

- and either Hungry for Battle (+1 to advance and charge rolls) or Stealthy (gain light cover [+1 to saves] if shot from > 18")

The Raven Guard supplement as it is provides you with some great pre-game movement tricks for ambushes/infiltration and movement during the game (for ex. giving you advance+charge for some units). The Raven Guard super doctrine gives you +1 to hit AND to wound rolls against Character units when you are in the Tactical doctrine, so Snipers and other things that ignore the "Look out sir" rule are cool.
