Hello Heresy Gamers,

My group has started to finish out their prospective 40k armies and are looking to get into another gw property. Were debating about this or maybe BFG. Ive looked around a bit and I want to pitch them on heresy over BFG since its the same scale, terrain, ect. Biggest thing though is it too close to 40k rules to keep the two separate? I played 3rd and 4th quite a bit and most everything Ive read seems to draw from that, barring new rules coming out. And the other thing I worry about is them playing too close the same. Our group is Space Wolves, thousand sons, death guard, white scars and mechanicus/knights. Are we going to wind up buying a new army to play with the same feel of big marine battles? I love the lore of it and the models that are coming out look absolutely amazing and i think that's a big draw for all of us.

Hello Heresy Inductee with an eerily similar avatar.

For me at least, Heresy always had a different feel than 40k, even when 40k operated on pretty much the same core ruleset as 30k. Now differences are also amplified by the completely different editions.

It is a separate game but you can use a lot of things from the 40k range. And since you are pondering heresy in your group, you can just take your models and proxy whatever you want for the introductory games. Of course, ideally you will eventually replace them on the table with a true 30k range but gotta start somewhere.

Hello Heresy Gamers,

And the other thing I worry about is them playing too close the same. Our group is Space Wolves, thousand sons, death guard, white scars and mechanicus/knights.

Sorry, do you mean 'too close' as in 1 ) similar style of play in both 30k and 40k, or 2 ) similar armies regardless of the Legion?

If 1) - the army composition in 30k can be very wild in comparison to 40k, it can feel similar if you want to but can be as diverse as possible (imagine a Death Guard force full of jump packs and jetbikes , or a Space Wolves siege oriented army with artillery and heavy support - it may be weird but you are free to do so)

If 2) - it's your choice really, in theory you can all keep bringing exactly the same stuff but usually different legion rules, styles of play and personal quirks and preferences will keep your group's armies nice and varied.

So, I'd say don't worry about new armies just yet, just give it a go with whatever you can find currently. My first heresy games were played with precisely zero models from 30k and everything was proxied by tyranids, guard and ultras. And it was still fun and informative. Though now there is this weird period when everyone awaits the new edition though official rules are not out yet.

More that it just feels like were playing a different edition than a different game from talking with em. I imagine they'll want to change the armies up, I know I do. Ill look up the rules and maybe we can run a quick and dirty game of this edition to see if we want to grab a couple box sets.

I only started during 7E, so really only familiar with the 6E/7E and 8E/9E eras, but there are a few things that stand out as quite different.

To me, the big things are the reaction system, which melds some degree of alternate activation into the game, and psychic powers, which have been overhauled to a completely different system. Some have said it's similar to older Warhammer Fantasy magic systems, but I'm not familiar there and cannot attest to it in any way.

This is how different I see it from 6E/7E/1E -> 2E Horus Heresy. It's significantly different from 8E/9E 40k just from my reads of the leaked rules.
