Was thinking about this after watching the tutorial on Warhammer Community yesterday.

Has anyone tried painting HH Thousand Sons with a gold undercoat and then using Spiritstone Red? They're designed to work over metallics as far as I know, and you get the gloss effect automatically without needing to use Blood Angels Red then 'Ardcoat.

Sound reasonable? I've only ever used the green gemstone paint before, in very limited amounts.

i use Gold then angron red over the top contrast could work, if you are doing it by brush you are gonna want to us alot of medium and go very slow like panel by panel and make sure theres no tidemarks etc

How well does Angron Red work? I've not used the clears they have, but they sure have interested me.

As someone who has used the Gemstone paints on pretty large surfaces (ie; wraithknights) they are not really meant to be slapped onto entire models. They go on quite thick and are more of a gel than what youre used to with acrylic paints.

If you want a Candy metallic red for Thousand Sons use either the contrast reds over a silver or gold base or use Angron red. Tamiya clear paints also work well since thats what Forgeworld originally used for their stuff.

The gemstone paints are definitely too thick to use for general painting without massive brushstroke issues.

I did see a metallic blood angels airbrush guide the other day that would also be awesome as a starter for thousand sons, using tamiya clear red over a silver base with purple ink for pre-shading.

If you're doing it by brush, then a rattlecan coat of retributor armour gold and then blood angels red contrast is also an excellent colour combo - seen here starting at 2:30.

He does airbrush that particular combo, but you could also do it by brush, I've seen it done that way also.

You're going to need a varnish coat after Contrast anyway, as it's quite a fragile paint, so it might as well be gloss.

(I am seriously tempted now to do some heresy metallic blood angels instead of/as well as my world eaters....)

i wanted to emulate a specific piece of heresy art where the 1ksons appeared more coppery. So i blast mine with a heavy coat of matt varnish but before that its alot redder.

i also user it with an airbrush which is a life(and time) saver.

I have been airbrushing BA red over Retributor Gold or Monument Rich Gold which is nearly identical. I previously tried brushing it on and that looked good for infantry but not vehicles, IMO. The airbrush makes it much more seamless. I also don't spray the gold, I prime black and then drybrush or zenithal the gold on (trying to decide which method looks better still), so there's shading built in.

I thought about highlighting the gold with stormhost silver before the red step. Do you think it would show up?

Painting a darker metal colour then hitting with a lighter one from above is typically how most people go about it. Before the GW tutorial I'd never seen anyone do it with gold as a base though always some dark metal going up to silver so I can't rightly say. It may show up but could end up even more subtle.
