Edited - I experimented more with this particular AI, learned more stuff, thus updated this post.

A different AI artist I've been using, free for 3 requests a day, unlimited with a subscription, called Wonder.  It's 3 requests, but it does 2 versions of each, so very technically it's 6 images.  The previous problem with CrAIyon is it struggled with faces.  With Wonder, it seems very attuned to celebrity faces, presumably there's a lot of samples on the Internet.  So here was my 1st experiment:

Henry Cavill as Adeptus Custodes

I've toyed with it more since posting.  Some other samples:

Tom Holland as a Space Marine Scout

This one was kinda interesting.  I technically requested "Tom Holland as a Primaris Space Marine".  I added "Primaris" as many different franchises have their own version (like StarCraft, Halo, etc.) so I added that (I thought just adding "Warhammer" as well).  It chose this red and blue colour scheme because I think this Wonder AI associated the actor with Spiderman, and those are his colours.

Please note, after just praising Wonder for its work on faces...I actually had to fix Tom Holland's face in-post (snap job just in PowerPoint as the AI was a little off), here was what it was originally, please note it's a bit into uncanny valley/cursed image territory:

Of course, all this is inspired by the Graham Norton interview with both these actors:

Stable Diffusion is also another AI image generator. While it does have a webfront demo at https://huggingface.co/spaces/stabilityai/stable-diffusion (unlimited free use, and clear open licensing of the images) it's main draw against it's peers is that it is open source, can be run from your own PC, and you can train it with additional images and tags to clean up any of the more esoteric features of AI images. Admittedly my python-fu is a bit rusty so I haven't implemented it as of yet. A fork that runs dreambooth and SD can be found at https://github.com/XavierXiao/Dreambooth-Stable-Diffusion .

As for some examples:

Thanks for the recommendation! Managed to get some good results from it. Behold, Rutger Hauer as a Chaos Marine.

I won't lie, I actually really like the "Miniature" it makes.

Brother November, thanks for this recommendation.  My friend Timperial Guard actually teaches programming with Python.  I'll tell him about this.

In the meantime, I tried it out, some very interesting creations from it the webfront:

That last one it just decided to do as a stain glass window, like in a church.  That was a clever interpretation.  I might fix the helmet in the same way as I did Tom Holland's face above (omg that sounded terrible, I quite respect the young man for his genuine passion for his work in the MCU).

Edit - altered above image:

What I liked about this, this looks like something from late 1st ed Rogue Trader era, right when Mk VII was a thing.

Wow, you found Mag from Warframe.

I got this from the prompt "a cybernetic robed tech priest"

I have to say I kinda like the jet turbine for a face look.

I think this is a really good tool for creating 40k scenes and landscapes. I'm currently using it to augment projects.

Thats what Im doing as well, got tons of trench warfare images, only problem is what images do I want to use as they are all good.

Oddly enough, I was prompting Wonder AI with "Adeptus Mechanicus" and "Techpriest" and stuff, she's also been giving me backgrounds instead of characters:

My favourite part was, this actually looks more 1st ed 40k, like Rick Priestley commissioned some artist to make sci-fi and the guy just imitated HR Giger or something because Warhammer 40,000 wasn't quite fully invented yet.

I've been teaching Wonder the Art AI some 40k taglines.  Here's "in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war":

This is an interesting thread and lots of interesting perspectives. I do feel like there's an ethical dimension about this that makes me unsure how much I should be engaging with this.

I do have to say it's very addictive to mess around with the prompts. I've mostly been using Nightcafé.

This is the closest I've gotten to making a Space Marine:

large.1632394280_FlamingSwordsMarine.jpg.7535632f9b9e064461d50c9dc01be08b.jpg

In my opinion the hardest thing to do is to get these to feel 'right'... It's very hit and miss.

A lot of the 'Space Marine' stuff on the web is pictures of painted minis.

I have been trying to up my photography game lately and one of the ways I wish to try it is to ape GW with better dioramas with terrain and backdrops. I was dragging my heels because the idea of finding a person I could trust to create a backdrop fitting my vision was stressful to me. Today a friend advised me to consider dabbling with AI art generators again.
