Is there any point in taking either type of shield with a praetor or centurion? Shields give an invulnerable save which doesnt stack (either 6++ or 5++), and both units already have either an iron halo or refractor field as standard, so whats the point in taking them?

I've just made a new praetor with a boarding shield, and already had a centurion with one. I'd like to keep them as they look cool, but if I'm better off giving them a different weapon because the Shields are pointless then I'll consider my options.

Ultramarines have a special shield that gives 5++/4++ in melee and it allows the additional attack when dual wielding.

So it might make sense for a UM centurion.

At least the combat shield is a free upgrade and you don't have to give up anything for equipping it.  So just say the equipped shields are combat shields and enjoy your cool minis.

Boarding shields grant Heavy, who's rerolls bonus only kicks in if the entire unit has it.

A praetor who's going to roll with cataphractii or breachers will want the boarding shield.

But ya, baking in the halo made the combat shield useless

HH 1.0 flashback:  You had to pay (or not) for everything separate on the old unit entry so Refractor and Halo fields were not an automatic thing and it was your choice which was cheaper..  a shield or a power field...   So the minis got modeled with them...

Now it is kinda pointless..   Other than the few things mentioned.
