So to preface, I am still rather new to 9th edition and secondary's. (back in my dayyyy myah myah myah....)

Today I played my 3rd game of 9th edition and it went much better. We tried out Nephilim and played the Conversion mission. For the wolves I took Glory Kills, A Mighty Saga, and Abhor the Witch. I was against Grey Knights (mostly paladins/terminators).

The mission seemed to encourage a midfield fight with the goal of taking your opponents objective, or at least pushing/pulling them off it. My secondary's mostly worked quite well, I maxed out Glory Kills and got most of Abhor the Witch. Sadly Saga got soft capped as I lost Logan early-ish do to mispositioning.

I guess what I am getting at is, what factors play into your secondary choices? Do you mostly pick them for the mission or the opponent, a combination of both? Or do you have 'comfort pick", where the others only rarely factor in?

Just from watching batreps and reading, a lot of people really seem to stress on their secondary selection, and I'm curious how my fellow Rout members make those choices. (especially as someone who's still new to this flavor of play)

Honestly, secondaries vary. Some require thought and planning in the army construction step such as Retrieve Nephilim Data (you will need some cheapish mobile squads to Skyclaws to hope around performing actions). Mighty Saga similarly requires a suitably tanky and hitty character.

Some are reactive, if you see an opponent bringing lots of vehicles or Monsters then Bring It Down can potentially net you lots of points. As you noticed, Abhor The Witch is a solid pick against Grey Knights, Thousand Sons and some flavours of Eldar.

Some pair well with particular missions. If you know you need to go all out grabbing Objectives and have an army built to take and hold them then Banners can be a good way to rack up bonus points for doing what you want to be doing anyway.

Oath of Moment has taken a small downgrade in Nephilim but is still a solid pick because on most turns, you will want to be doing some or all of those things anyway. Also it is not Action-based so does not tie up your units.

Generally speaking I normally build my army with the capability to handle 1 Secondary well, normally Retrieve Nephilim Data or Engage On All Fronts. I normally pick a second to cover what I want to be doing anyway, often Oath of Moment. Lastly I tend to pick one to react to my opponent's army (Grind Them Down, Assassinate, Abhor The Witch etc). If my opponent brings a balanced army that does not favour a particular secondary, something fluff like one of our custom Secondaries.

I really like our secondary options.

SW feel competitive.

-Glory kills buff to include vehicles was massive...just played harlies and it hard counters their transport play style

-Mighty saga gives us a defensive scoring choice on some maps that is auto 10 if your warlord survives

Now for other thoughts in general

In competitive sports the specific matchup between teams is what usually determines the outcome.

Secondary choices shape the flow of the game.

You need to build your army specifically to achieve secondary scoring (no psyker to unlock abhor the witch for example)

O I didn’t actually look at our chapter specific secondary’s for a while. And they seem pretty solid. Definitely worth building a warlord for!

i always like to build my list for some board control. Before i prefered to have tough units in the middle to keep objectives for stranglehold and oaths, and one ore two units to do banners or rnd. But now im focussing more on engage and the actions. Usually banners on a 6 objective map and rnd on a 5 objective map..

So in bringing more 5 men jumppack squats.

I've really enjoyed using Warrior Born/Pride (forget the name), it's usually a pretty auto 3pts for at least 4/5 turns for me.

I've tried using A mighty Saga, but then get too greedy and get my warlord killed turn 2 (happened twice now), so I need to play that one a bit better.

Glory kills, I'll admit is one I glossed over, but looks very good in reviewing it, I'll have to try it out.

Gotta say, I am usually a lot more keen to play faction secondaries now than the universals.

Mighty saga is easy if you plan for it

Make your warlord a support character during army construction

Judiciar if you use one is perfect

My scorpion special CM is warlord bc i never send him out.  I use every turn i can get to slap reroll all hits + attack plus 1 per model on a core unit (skyclaws usually).

When i run out of bodies then i join the fight.  Min. of 10 points just standing on that objective doing what i already do

I'll have to try Warrior Pride soon. And yes, Glory Kills was really good for me. Felt like I was rewarded for just playing the game, and not so much that I had to work for it if that makes sense.

Yeah I could see that being the way for it. I also got greedy and ran Logan too far up and he got jumped by two grandmasters...
