Pasting in from someone else's reddit thread on the topic:

Important PSA for iOS users:
As many people may be aware, the developer of the Battlescribe App abandoned development of it approximately 2 years ago. While the separate team who manage the data we all use have continued working, the actual app itself has not been updated for a considerable length of time.

Due to the app being abandoned, it has now been taken down from the App Store, meaning that it can no longer be downloaded. Apple removes apps that have been abandoned to avoid compatibility and quality issues.

Confirmed here by Alphalas, one of the data developers: https://i.imgur.com/u99xW13.png
As such, if you are an iOS user with Battlescribe installed on your device at the moment: DO NOT DELETE IT.

If you delete the app, you will be unable to reinstall it.

Currently, this only affects iOS. Battlescribe is still available for download from the Google Play store and as a PC app directly from the Battlescribe website.

The Battlescribe Data Team are working on their own open source replacement for Battlescribe, however there is no current timescale for this.

Edit - Also, because I know this will come up: This has nothing to do with Games Workshop. They have not sent a C&D or taken any form of legal action. This is simply Apple cleaning up abandonware on their platform.

Not...really? The dude's giving people advice on how not to lose it and letting people know there is apparently a replacement forthcoming.

If he had been gloating or pointing to his own app, then you would be correct. As it is, this is just a post stating what is going on/why it is happening, what people can do, and letting people know that the BS data team is trying to make a replacement. No need for any disparaging remarks.

Can you be a "competitor" to something no longer "produced"?

BS is/was a great tool, however there are some very valid grumbles to be had about it, especially recently:

  • The BS Developer has not updated their application on any platform for over 2 years.
  • They still charge for removing ads, meaning they have 2 revenue streams there.
  • None of the proceeds as far as I'm away make it back to supporting the guys who actually create and curate the data.

There's nothing "bad form" about this at all.
