Impulse buys and FOMO...

Recommended Posts

I picked up a whole bunch of little allied side projects to use with the allies rules of 8th edition, only for 9th to swing hard into the mono faction set up before I'd really done anything with them... Oh well....

What I have found quite useful as a motivator is to just pick  project and not focus solely on it and burn out before it's done, but instead to fold in a unit a month and then you actually have a useable force instead of a pile of boxes within a year....

I think GW are very good at pressing two buttons - nostalgia and FOMO.

40k has been around long enough to generate nostalgia and the short production runs and box deals bring on the FOMO.

I am also great at devising new little projects that 'justify' a new purchase. I do love the package arrival dopamine hit - it doesn't have to be big, painting ancillaries are enough to keep me going.

I have recently come back into the hobby and got sucked in with the Primaris Strikeforce last Christmas to get me back into painting, then picked up the Codex to go with it (to help decide my chapter).

Before I got through putting together half of the strikeforce, HH 2.0 got announced. As an original Epic Space Marine owner, the nostalgia kicked in.

I'm the meantime, I'd picked up a slightly used copy of Kill Team Octarius as I play a skirmish game with two buddies.

First forward a few of months and I have HH AoD, loyalist and traitor codexes, the KT Moroch box and Into the Dark ordered.

All of a sudden I have realised that I'll probably never play 40k or HH 2.0 so that's a lot of 'investment' I could have done without.

So the aim for the rest of 2022 and 2023 is to concentrate on Kill Team and ignore the rest of the 40k universe.

FOMO only exists if I let it...

my 'pile of future joy' as I like to call it

This is how I'm going to refer to it from now on. Positive reframing!

I have evolved far beyond this and moved onto the future cutting edge of impulse printing since getting a 3d printer.

I genuinely have printed entire armies and ended up sticking them in boxes to add to my pile of plastic shame. I have a full truescale mkii/mkiii Imperial Fists army of around two hundred men complete with truescale vehicles, a 25mm army of beakies with plans for 25mm titans, Unificiation Wars Dusk Raiders force, probably around twenty truescale dreadnoughts, I can do entire companies of marines now on a whim.

The one saving grace being resin is a lot cheaper but out of the probably five hundred marines I've started to paint maybe 15?

It's not so much 'impulse' buys, I have a plan for 90% of my purchases, but there is a lot of future proofing. I'll admit there are parts of my mountain of shame that go back quite a bit, but any new purchases are made to either get the best deal possible, or protect against future price rises. At this point, the only thing I'd even consider selling would be my older metal models I bought when I first got into the hobby,  but even then, since it's packed away, I don't need to worry right now.

See a model I like -> justify reason to myself why I need it -> buy model....

Yeah, Impulse buyer extraordinaire!

Currently I have far more Imperium issues than I originally agreed with myself (most necron and sister models), and I don't even collect those!

'Pile of Potential' is the other Cognomen I see, and I prefer that!

There's definitely a FOMO from myself - I did get a bit concerned when it looked like my local store wouldn't get the HH box in - I didn consider paying full price at one point I was that worried about not getting one, but only very limited stuff. I am also a sucker for limited edition/collectors models that I can slot into my army. I guess this is like the rare car/card type thing where others will see and recognise the effort that has gone into assembling that force.

My last FOMO purchase was probably cursed city. Since then I've been pretty lucky. We can see since 2020-2021, FOMO has decreased a bit with GW as demand drops (no more lockdown) and they get their stock projections in order.

The last stuff I bought that will sit in a box for a while was basically all the new Eldar. Loves me some spess elf, however I've wanted to paint some Thousand Sons for a tourney, other Eldar I've had for much longer to get my army legal for 9th, and then Heresy...

I don't need to echo all of the above, just want to add that you are not alone as you can see by all the replies here

Also, I am loving the term 'Pile of future joy'

Now, If only i could paint as fast as i can come up with excuses for needing something.

Its my birthday at the end of September, so that the Leagues of Votann excuse sorted. hehehe

While visiting a late friend of mine years ago, I was talking about all the “great deals” I was getting on minis via eBay. He warned me not to save myself into the poorhouse.

Well I showed him! Got a professional license, job, and house so I can store my hoard of unpainted plastic and resin!

My hoard is halfway built, and maybe 1/5 painted… maybe. By the time I’m dead maybe it’ll be 1/4 painted.

Happy future birthday and associated pile of stumpy joy @Cyrox

Into The Dark is my birthday present to myself!

Ah thank you, and happy birthday to you too - hope you enjoy the Gallowdark! Excited to see what else is in store for Kill Team

Not sure if this is more of a confession or just a cry for help LOL...

This year I have spent over £500 (the money is not the issue, I am quite lucky and in a good position) alone on projects that within a few weeks I have sold on or just lost interest after the initial "hype" has died.

Between a CSM force and the HH box I committed a sizeable wedge of money.

But I always come back to Primaris (My weakness).

Am I alone in this?

The trick is to not sell them and keep piling on :)

I am trying to do better, but still slip up and end up with more than I need.

Take the Votan army box. I am not really a fan of the armys look, but my brain went “hey 120£ is not that much, we should grt that”

See thats how I justify it to myself... I did it with the KT box containing the Heavy Intercessors I am ashamed to admit how many I bought.

Personally, I have a list of models that I want to finish existing "armies", random models I just particularly like, and a list of things that I'm interested in (e.g. Warhammer Quest) - if it's not on that list then I'm not buying it, although it can be added to the list after a sensible "cooling off" period has expired. I'm probably helped by the fact that my main focus is the background and models rather than the rules, so it somewhat cancels out a lot of the hype.

I get this also, and it's been one of the things I've managed to cut out to restrict buying. When I see a good deal, and for some minis that I think I'll want in my army, I might try to get 2-3 sets of them - Indomitus for example, I wanted 6 bladeguard and 6 eradicators so I got two boxes - even though I'll probaby never have them all painted. I aaaaalmost bought 2 sets of Eldritch Omens to get the shroud runners for a 6 elf unit, but stopped myself.

When you know for a fact that models past a certain amount will never even get assembled, FOMO loses a lot of its potency. You have already "missed out." You just have not gotten there yet.

I used to, until I finally learned how to paint and now refuse to paint less than my currant standard(takes forever). Because of this, I made a rule to only invest in certain armies going forward and avoid starting any new ones. I've sold most of my impulse buy armies. I look at the rate I'm going and know that painting everything will only get completed in retirement age. I'd be luck to get most of my necrons done in the next few years. The great thing is this change is much easier on my wallet....except when the new horus heresy hit. ugh. I'm done I swear!

This is me putting my recent FOMO Heresy purchases with the other unopened impulse purchases.

I started reading this thread the other day thinking 'Ill not fall into this trap', then I remembered I was going to do a 1st ed narrative campaign for my homebrew chapter fighting alongside the 'natives' of their future homeworld (Medieval world) against Khornate 'Vikings' and Daemons. Now Im sat here with over 200 plastic Normans and Vikings with more in the post to add to my pile of opportunity...

I hate myself sometimes...

Campaign is gonna be good though.  and I also have 2 armies for Warhammer Ancients/Saga/Lion Rampant...

Oh and I did blow over £80 for 2 of the ltd ed Legion of the Damned Vet Sgt Centurius, that I dont regret though, I still remember the car ride to the Preston store (UK) to get mine back in the day (I snagged 3 and got the Ultramarine dex *vomits*) damn they were good days.

But yeah Ill never fall for that impulse buying stuff... Nope not me...

The old manager from the Southport store literally had a loft like that, he was ex vet (Kosovo) and was really messed up over it and had a nice bit of cash because of it, and he always had to stash his minis from his wife, his loft actually looked like an average GW stockroom. That was back in 3rd/4th ed era, and knowing his painting habits I bet a lot of that stuff is up there still shrink wrapped. Oh to get my hands on the old CSM Mutation sprue again..
