Impulse buys and FOMO...

My biggest weakness for buying stuff I don't need is when I can get things at a discount.

Definitely the same for me; my FOMO concern is less about missing specific limited editions or models, and more about missing out on the best possible price for something, even if I don't need it right away and potentially won't get around to it for years. Edition starter sets, battleboxes, Christmas battleforces, Army Launch sets, even Start Collecting boxes that are about the replaced all look like viable targets to me if they offer a good saving on a combination of kits i'm interested in anyway.

Case in point, I have a Piety and Pain box on my shelf that has been sat unopened for 18 months. I collect both armies, and I wanted all the kits inside, so for me paying about £90 (after FLGS discount) for £190 of models felt like a no-brainer, even if I haven't actually gotten around to them yet. I got Ag of Darkness, Hexfire and Eldritch Omens for the same reasons. It probably seems like a lot, but the other side of it is that I very rarely buy standalone kits which are comparatively very expensive, and I tend to let my hobby be guided by what I've managed to amass, rather than whatever the new hotness is.

My next big project for example is going to be Chaos Space Marines, which is a massive army I've managed to accrue pretty much just through discount boxes like Dark Vengeance, Shadowspear and Eldritch Omens. I haven't bought any of the new kits; not because I don't want them, but because there's no incentive to buy them right now if i'm not actively working on/playing the army.

Ive managed to stay away from the HH box so far, I really want to start Fire Hawks in the 1st ed colours to go with my Legion of the Damned, but realistically that wont get painted as I still have Slaaneshi and Khornate marines to finish off, Slaaneshi Daemons, Eldar, Space Wolves, homebrew Not Templars, Legion of the Damned, Squats, Khornate Squats (and maybe Slaaneshi Squats) and Guard (well technically Guard 'armies', WW1 and WW2 themed German, WW1 themed British, a Penal regiment, small Scion forces themed to each army and when WGA release the Halfling Cav Ill have a whole army of half pint Krieg Deathriders. Oh and Im contemplating Halfling Soviets as well).

So yeah at least Im self aware and I know Ill never get anything done with the box for a very long time. specially as I detest painting yellow.

I am glad I missed out on the Ash Wastes box, just because its discounted over buying everything separate I dont think its worth it even at the cheaper price, especially after hearing from others its another incomplete rulebook with bugger all vehicle rules in it( I should have seen that coming though).  Im learning the art of sitting on my choices for a while and really contemplating if I NEED it or do I just want it because its cheap.

Oh no. Reading that post @Slave to Darknessis like reading the post I just made on a different hobby forum. One of the reasons I stepped back from that hobby was an inability to complete the projects that rack up.

There's no hope for me here....unless I am VERY strict...

You were making Sailor Moon cosplay outfits wernt you? :D

Id make a great sailor scout, if I didnt have a beard.

I have the opposite. I never ever impulse buy stuff, and rarely even buy GW at all anymore, but God damn it i wish I'd bought some of the starter sets and boxed stuff the last few years.

In some ways thats a good problem to have... I am slowly getting there.

But any new Primaris thats 100% out the window :).

Oh, I don't know, mordern times and all that

And now there is an inspiration for conversion... A Emperor's Children marine with a sailor Moon outfit on

Impulse bought indomitus even though I am a chaos main collector - allways wanted to dip into necrons. Made necrons into a 2k force. PLayed I think 4 games and sold them. Just didn't feel em. Did have fun painting them though. Those marines are still sitting in the cupboard, a few painted as black templars and a few painted as deathwatch. I even am probably at 2k pts deathwatch now even though I played them only once. Impulse bought space wolves and have 2k of em - trying to sell them but can't find buyers. It was a fun painting/modelling project but GW made them too wolfy and unserious and after a few games of getting tabled my love for them never quite appeared.

Impulse bought some dark eldar a year ago and this is a project I am enjoying. Haven't played a single game but I do enjoy painting them from time to time. Still have an unpacked combat patrol to be built.

I will buy Votanns for sure - I like the aesthetic and it will be a fun painting experience for me.

So my status at the mo:

Keeping - my large deathguard collection of 20 years, my Imperial Guard, my Iron Warriors and Daemons, dark eldar.

Trying to sell - Space wolves, Eldar stuff (maybe 750pts), possibly admech (allthought I have only 500pts that I like how I painted so I'm quite content with not expanding nor selling this), Tyranids (2kpts).

Going to invest - Votans, probably more deathguard and daemons as usual and the new guard tank when it comes.

Do I have a problem?

I love my Space Marines, and Imperial Knights. However, I always end up getting too excited about stuff. I bought heavy into Skitarri  when they dropped, back when they were Skitarii and not Admech yet. And I did nothing with them.

I have two semi-completed AoS armies that I have never fielded. Heck, even my dwarfs army from WHFB is still half-grey.

And with Squats coming back, my love for all things dwarf is calling to me.

So no, you are not alone.

I think my impulse buys were Imperial Guard, which was an expensive impulse buy and I somehow have a pile of Necrons thanks to Primaris coming with them in 2020.  I am better now, but like the OP I have a good salary and the spare cash to purchase GW.  What kid has this kind of cash anyway?  I never had the cash for it as a kid.  However, for 20+ years I have cycled through the war game hobby, starting with the Bretonian/Lizardmen starter back in the late 90s.  Then it was Mordheim, Warmachine, Infinity, Malifaux, Uncharted Seas, etc until I said woah.  I was able to get out of the hobby for the most part from 2009 to 2019, due to the birth of my son.

However, in 2017 I started to slowly purchase and build Primaris, assemble them, and put them in the closet.  In 2019, a couple of my friends who had been out of the hobby for some time wanted to dive back in.  I tried to keep myself to Primaris, but there is an Imperial Guard army, Necron army, and an Imperial Knight sitting next to them now.  2020 rolls around and my work has me working half days(with full day pay)  so I can spend the afternoons with my now school-less child and I spent most of the evenings painting after hanging out with my kid for six hours straight.

I have a few issues now though beyond impulse buys.  I painted my Primaris Marines(300 models worth including 2 Indomitus sets) a custom scheme of Space Wolves Grey and White(The Spectral Swords Ultima Founding Chapter).  I picked up the Horus Heresy box earlier this year, which I am still working on and I found a love for the Raven Guard.  I am sorely tempted to repaint all 300, but that was 6 months worth of evenings toiling(not to mention my wife was also very against a repaint).  So now I have 300 Primaris models painted a custom scheme when I really just want to play as Raven Guard(which is how I am painting the Horus Heresy box.)

I also want to pick up a Slaves to Darkness army(A start collecting and the new release box coming this winter) but I look at the box and find that it feels like I am picking up more work.  I really love playing the game but the hobby aspect is rough for me.  I spent the last 3 years working though my backlog which included Star Wars Legion(Rebels and Imperials), Primaris Marines, Infinity, Necrons, Imperial Guard, and my son's Chaos Space Marines(made a deal to paint them all for him.)  Now I have 10 more 'Raven Guard' left to paint(a mix of 30k and leftover extra Primaris Marines I had like the 2nd of the Indomitus heroes)  and as soon as they are complete going to bury myself in a new project.

The other issue is that since my friends also play Marines, I find myself playing Guard and Necrons more than my favorite army.

Don't burn yourself out.

Allow yourself to take a break.

I feel like I did a lot of impulse buying in the pre-primaris days, my classic marine crusade kept growing until it was frankly too big (for me anyway)

Only Impulse buy since I sold my classic marines and restarted everything in Primaris format, was probably shadowspear. It was the first real expansion to Primaris marines at the time, so I was just happy for there to be new stuff. Some of the only primaris models I've unloaded as I feel they never really meshed with my crusade.

as for FOMO? I guess I tend to get every rare overpriced character they make. The 30th anniversary sergeant, the birthday captain, the 500th store lieutenant, sergeant jovus, sergeant castor, the Primaris chapter champion, etc etc. Heck, I only have a few few allied sisters for my crusade, but I had to track down the rare oop sister models for them too.

Kinda feels like we need an ETL for all of us to have a reason to blast through the backlogs.

Very much so. My Marines have mostly been in stasis for years waiting for the next ETL!

Play them as Raven Guard then!

Also, playing Marines vs Marines is just a fact of life in 40k. No reason to let your friends have all the fun.

I'm not in a position to impulse buy things anymore. Not after racking up a distressing amount of PayPal Credit debt mostly buying things for my Heresy Raven Guard. In my defense: Fully built and painted Storm Eagle for $100. Thunderhawk for my wife's birthday (she plays Blood Angels), and way too much money on recasts of OOP stuff I refuse to pay the ludicrous ebay asking price for (mostly shoulder pads and upgrade kits)

I have a Harlequins project and a 40k Space Wolves project I'm probably going to unload at our FLGS for store credit. I need heavy weapons kits and a shiny new Kratos tank.

It's a good thing my wife handles the finances, or we'd be in trouble.

Yeah I done something similar many years back... It was about the time of the release of the Fantasy Chaos army box with the new metal Chosen.... I think I spent close to 1k in my local GW that day.

IK renegade was this for me - I missed it the first time around and the second time it had the terrain and upgrade sprue too. In the space of a few weeks I ended up buying two copies, a Castellan and 1 of each armiger box. I mean,... it was a bargain and made sense to buy enough to make an army.....

All of them are still on the sprues. I even ordered a Canis Rex sprue recently to allow for all (plastic) variants.

This also lead on to getting a supporting Ad-mech force a bit later when I started to consider them again - the older start collecting with the dune crawler just before it went out of stock and prices increased and also the fist of the omnissiah set. I've built two skitari so far.....
