Anyway, I get the way special characters seem to miss out on paying for Relics is kind of cheating, but as people have mentioned their game balance is wrapped up in their points.

Which is what Relics should have really. Or be dropped entirely for expanded wargear sections? Same thing really.

Besides, with the reduction in starting CPs it becomes quite difficult to pay points ahead of games and enjoy all the Strategums we can. I've noticed a trend in games with people never using any bar a selection of specific Strategums now. Sure some people didn't use the peripheral Strategums but others did. Paying up front for Special Characters just kills their use or the use of certain FW choices or Strategums depending on the army.

They said 2 characters.

Ah you are correct, you were replying directly to someone else who specifically mentioned that. My bad.

Guess you missed this

I know it's a bit out of scope, but still related:

I think Crusade provides an elegant method of dealing with named characters; you can take them, but they are fixed- frozen in time, and as such, they don't interact with a significant element of Crusade play. This is connected to the "Free" Relic debate- a fixed character doesn't pay for their relic, but also doesn't get to choose that relic, which means no opportunity to pick for synergy.

A generic character who reaches Legendary rank in Crusade has the capacity to achieve parity with many named characters and even surpass some of them, and there is a LOT more player control over the specific combination of upgrades- even if your group insists that all honours are random.

Crusade also has the (IMHO) advantage of being unaffected by Nephilim Matched Play CP changes, which makes requisition strats viable; these can allow even a green generic character to take a step toward parity with  named characters: my Watchmaster for the Deathwatch Patrol is burning a huge amount of RP on requisition strats to get two warlord traits; he isn't super deadly- I wanted to lean into the Commander aspect rather than a super fighter, so one trait lets him give a unit OBSEC (or double it if they have it already), and the other lets him give a unit the ability to shoot even if they're performing actions. I haven't figured out whether or not I'm going to kit him out with a relic eventually... But had he been a named character, that wouldn't even be an option. And if I was playing in Nephilim Matched it would burn half my starting CP.
