got a question for you chaos guys

Hey guys,

So i subscribed to the Warhammer Imperium magazine, and my first "premium gift" showed this month, which was the chaos marines set.  it comes with a sorcerer, 2 greater possessed, and 10 legionnares with an autocannon, plasma gun, champion with chainaxe and plasma pistol, 3 with bolters, and 4 with chainswords.

 

now, the gift box comes with a full paint guide for black legion, but im not sure if i wanna go with them, or pick another legion from the core codex.

 

my question, is which would be a good fit for what comes in the box? i'm not sure if ill add to the set, apart from maybe a box of possessed to bump it up to 500pts.  it'll mainly be something for small combat patrol scale games at home.

 

my choices so far from a rules stance, and color choices, would be either Black Legion, Night Lords, Red Corsairs, or Word Bearers.

With those models you could choose any legion. But if you grab a box of Possessed than Word Bearers, as you note, would work well.

Biased, but I’d go with Word Bearers. Any units and any configuration of marks, mutations, etc. are just great for them.

 

Rules are good and paint scheme are also cool, IMO.

Red is satisfying to paint and generally looks great on the table top - if you do you can reasonably switch between red corsairs and word bearers.

You could paint them as your own homebrew renegades, that way you can swap between legions game-by-game. My bright green renegades, the Korven, are usually Red Corsairs, but sometimes I fancy playing them as Night Lords or Alpha Legion (feels wrong to do that with my Iron Warriors). As long as you're clear with your opponent before the game.

The Beauty of the CSM Codex is, that all subfactions are very playable. And the Units in the Box vary between "got to Take them anyway" ( legionaries) and auto-include (master of possession) so +1 for make your own warband and try different subfactions. That or creations of bile, Word bearer or Red corsairs for advance 'n charge

What do creations of bile look like btw? I haven't seen any pics when I try to Google them, mostly just find pics of Fabius.

Yeah that is a problem. Most people I have seen using them just use any old legion and saying its Creations of Bile. Ive based mine around Hellraiser, John Carpenters 'The Thing' and other assorted body horror influences. Well actually I started before CoB was a thing but my vision for my force just fits so Ive gone from normal renegades to Biles lot. 

 

Best advice I can think of is try and come up with a theme and run with it, mines Horror films obviously, but I have started looking into Japanese gore manga (theres some seriously messed up stuff out there) and videogames to get more influences, you can only get so far with Cenobites and The Thing.  The videogame 'Scorn' may give you some modelling ideas if you choose CoB. Plus if you do go for them Id be more than willing to bounce some ideas about with you, gives me more chances to talk to people about kick ass films and other horror media whilst in the hobby framework.

For the Possessed I used arms from the old Fantasy Possessed kit for the heads, I didnt rate the possessed heads much and wanted something a little less human looking, I may have another pass at these, I want to break up the obvious marine silhouette  a bit more so I might chop them at the waist and legs and try remodelling them in really unnatural poses, I cant see a Daemon keeping its meatsack in its normal shape for long, especially if Fabius ha been messing with the body before possession.



 

Warp Talons, left one is a blatant 'Chatterer' from Hellraiser. 



The one thing that unifies my army is they are all blind, either their eyes have been removed or they just dont have eye sockets, hell some of them dont even have actual faces, just oozing gashes and other random lumps of flesh in odd places.

Its basically whatever warband sold their soul to Fabius. Its not a coherent force.

thanks for the advice guys. i'm thinking i'm gonna go with a word bearers kinda scheme.  since i've got the paints for that one already, it's gonna be the easiest at this time.

You could do Word Bearers that have been 'twiddled with' by Bile?  Best of both then.

As mentioned, pretty much anything works. 

 

The thing you have to realize about the Chaos codex is overall it is 'good'. Overall there are a handful of relics you will find in a lot of armies

 

After that it becomes a playstyle (and background) choice.

 

Vanilla CSM troops are a good fit in most armies, but perhaps an argument can be made for Red Corsairs, and Black Legion using them best? (RC have double model count obsec is great, BL have a decent strat for CSM Legionaries).

 

Possessed are again, all around good, but Word Bearers do well, and so do Creations of Bile, and EC's with Possessed.

 

Since you ask Creations of Bile are a very good army right now, and have avoided the nerf bat so far. Ironically Khorne is a good mark for CoB. (See what I did there? Khorne on the CoB? Right, moving on....) Also ironically Bile himself is not a great choice for the army if playing very competitively. (Just thought I'd mention that.) Out of the box CoB is just a really fun assault based army. I compare them to Wolves on steroids. 

 

Word Bearers are really fun right now too, but really do like their Dark Apostles to bring it all together.

 

Again, you can't really go wrong. A lot of your decision, I think, should be around those fun legions that fit your paint style/background.

Hmm, okay. One point though; if I understand it right, if you take CoB, aren't you required to take bile and make him the warlord? Or is it IF he's in the list, he's auto warlord?

Nope. CoB is its own thing. He doesn't have to be in the list, or it's warlord.

Oh okay, I was reading the article on goonhammer from 2020 and it said he was a forced include for CoB. Did that get changed then? Or did they mess that up
