Hi - I think if you Google or look on Youtube you should find a solid amount of material on competitive COB as they are a popular and strong build.

You are likely looking at the usual suspects for COB - Dark Apostle with Illusory Supplication, a Master of Possession with Liber of Hereticus, Terminator brick with the Black Rune, Chosen or Possessed and Warp Talons or a big unit of Khorne Bikers with the Black Mace. Some take the Big man Abaddon, others don't as he makes the COB secondary harder to score (from what I understand - not a COB player myself).

Fight on death is very, very powerful vs other close combat armies. COB probably has the best trait in the book. Makes trading with COB very difficult. On the other hand, shooting armies don't particularly care and so the trade off is COB have a harder time into them, then say Emperors Children which are more mobile/have better shooting.

For example Zak Nelson List:

I think the above is a good example of a potent list for CoB. What I would advise is you learn/note the units that a lot of these lists have in common (no matter the Legion).

You'll notice a lot of very decent units make it into a lot of competitive lists. The nuances in the lists are usually coming from the Legion rules, and/or traits/relics/Strats.

That being the case there's a lot of potency in those elements for CoB. That is to say.... get some reps in with the list before committing. See if you are liking/comfortable with how CoB works.

I find it almost too much. It feels like Space Wolves on steroids to me, just better on almost every level. It doesn't take long to figure that out though, and maybe that's what you're going for. (strictly competitive)

Now not to muddy the waters - but your experience with CoB may also be very terrain dependent and local meta. For example, on less dense boards in a meta where T'au are popular - good luck..you will need it. Vs other close combat armies on dense boards? Well enjoy your opponents tears.

You could potentially try taking more shooting elements to balance it up, but most CoB players appear to double down on what the legion trait does.

It is not just a CoB issue - in general outside of Noise Marines or an Abaddon buffed unit the shooting in the Codex is less then stellar. That Zak Nelson list for example, probably does not want to run into mass vehicles or flyers.
