I came back to Warhammer 40K a little over a year ago. This was my progress of building for the first month or so:

At the time Tau could still take five-man fire-warrior squads. It was also too cold to spray primer on my models, so they remained bare for some time. In January I returned to college and my progress slowed a bit. Last July I had time off to finish a couple of models and get a little bit of paint on my force and take another picture:

Yann,

Yes, I used cork from a local craft store.

Firedrake,

Thanks! I have more than I wanted to build and paint on my hands all at once. My original goal was a Tau suit army; it has been a desire since fourth edition. All the fire warriors are there because they came with the start collecting boxes.

DaBoi,

I've used all sorts of stuff for bases, these models just have cork or the base terrain that comes supplied in the kits. I think just plain sand in different size grain works really well. I have also had good results with plastic card. I have some small smooth transparent glass pieces that I hope to use on an army with snow planet-themed bases someday.

Urauloth,

I am glad you ask; it reminds me that I want to do some closer shots of the drones! The color scheme is purple and red, the purple is started on some of the fire warriors pictured. My goal is to get an "Irkin Invader" look instead of any existing tau sept. I have been playing the army with the Borkan sept rules the extra range and the buff to suits really appeal to me.

Xenith,

My original goal was to build a specific force of crisis suits so it would be easier to keep up with the painting, but it got a little out of hand. Ha Ha! I used army painters' speed paint, on the fire warriors initially but the purple was so dark I did some experimentation on the drones with other purple options in the speed paint lineup. I need to get some close up on here and maybe get some troubleshooting ideas.

Here is a side-by-side work in progress of the fire warriors where I used grey seer spray, nun oil, dry brushed white (back row) then speed paint purple (middle row), when not happy with how dark the purple was, I tried to dry brush some pink to bring the details back (front row). I think I need to re-work my lighting and maybe get a better photo space set up. And why does this pic keep posting as sideways?

Sideways picture
  • 1 month later...

I have been busy since school started back up, but I had enough spare time and the weather was good enough to try a spray experiment. The picture is still sideways. I used army painter black primer because the GW stuff was out of stock, but it saved me $6 so I am happy, once the primer dried, I passed over the front and sides of the transport with Corax White until I was happy with the coverage. I still can't figure out how to get the pictures from posting sideways, advice would be appreciated.

If you are posting these as a direct upload, I don't know how to correct it, but if they are uploaded to an Album, here's how to rotate them. Once all the way to the image, mouse over the image, and bottom right a "image tools" button will appear, Rotate is one of the options

Thanks Grot! I will do some digging into how to start an album here, my first look into it has me hitting a wall so I will need to keep looking.

From the top of page, click the "Create" button (the "+" button on mobile), choose Image, then choose where the content belongs (generally, or specifically), then it will prompt to Create an Album.

Once an Album has been created, you can upload directly to that Album via your Profile, and then Albums

Yay ... Now I don't have to have people in the office stare at me when I stand and turn my head sideways.... ....

That T'AU army is pretty big!!  On the speedy painty colour stuff... Have you diluted it with contrast medium to make it less dark !?!... I had the same problem with Bloodletters and contrast paint (Blood Angels i think ) I mixed it 1 part contrast to 5 parts contrast medium and it was still a nice colour but not so strong !!

I guess your T'AU are coming at a good time, with the Rumour of Farsight's new suit on the Horizon...

Cheers, M.

Mumeishi,

Thanks! I did get some medium to add but I did not dilute my paint to that extent, more like a 1 to 3 ratio. I will try 1 to 5 on the next squad I paint and see how that goes. I can appreciate uniformity across an entire army. But in this case, I am ok with a slight difference in paint in each squad as a way to tell one from another on the tabletop. Even my crisis suits will probably have a different color scheme from one squad to the next. I plan to tie it all in with red and purple showing up throughout the army.

I had the old FarSight with the metal shield and sword upgrades, if the model was not finecast I would have picked up the current mini already. I am excited to see the next model; I would even be happy with a plastic kit of the current sculpt.

An unexpected bonus to the magnets is that the arm pivots and makes him look a bit more dynamic. After I get a few other kits built I plan to add a little bling to him, so the look is less generic. Later this month my goal is to get an army pic when I get to the LGS.
