Magnetizing a Leman Russ

I have never used magnets before and was curious how difficult the Leman Russ is to magnetize. Mostly I'm interested in the turret but if the sponsons and hull weapon are easy I might do them as well. Thank you, this is my first foray into this side of the hobby.

Annoyingly I'm in the process of writing a beginner's guide to magnetising at the minute, but won't get chance to try and finish it until at least Saturday! =[

To answer (badly) - a Leman Russ should be fairly simple to magnetise. I don't have the kit in front of me, but you shouldnt have any real difficulties trying to work around the kit itself.

If you can wait that long then I would be more than happy to dig out my (admittedly old) LR kit on sat/sun/mon and give you some tips, assuming nobody beats me to it. =]

Hardest part is the sponsons since you have to hide the magnet so it can't be seen while the sponsons are removed. The Demolisher and regular Leman Russ actually magentise completely differently, the demolisher needs the gun to be magnetised while you don't have to magnetise the regular one at all if you just don't glue the turret base to the rest of the turret.

The hull and sponson guns will just stay in without magnets if there's enough paint to create friction. Its pretty easy to mess up magnetising them if you're inexperienced because you can't see inside the sponson very well. Easiest thing to do is to measure enough space for 2 magnets at the bottom of the gun and cut it out, then make sure two magnets fit there before using some modeling putty to fix the top magnet in place and make sure the bottom one is level. Once the putty has hardened you can put some glue on the bottom magnet and push it into the housing.

Other option is you get a drill bit of the same thickness as your magnets, hold the weapon into the housing and drill into the back of the housing until you drill through into the gun. Then you can swap out the guns and use the same hole in the housing to correctly place a hole in the gun. If you drill too deep into the gun you just have to use a bit more putty to keep the magnet in place.

Not sure if this will work - hopefully - there were a bunch of different videos you can watch to gauge difficulty on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=magnetizing+leman+russ+battle+tank

Hope that can give you some idea of how far you can go and how hard/easy you may find it to do different magnets based on how well you know your own skills vs. what they are showing to do.

It's been a minute since I've done it, but its largely a case of just putting the magnet in (at least for Demolisher and it's variants). There's a little bit of awkwardness with the front plate, but you can forgo that.

Sponsons don't even require magnetization. They fit pretty snugly anyway, and after the base coat you can just slot them in and out as necessary.
