Despoilers, 20 strong and marching with chainaxes.

In a 3k game I usually bring 3 squads of 20 despoilers and give the sgt either a power fist or Falax blades. The rest are basic with chainaxes.

It's a big enough squad that it takes dedicated fire power to kill and any firepower they take isn't directed at my other more important units.

 Yes, sorry for any confusion, I changed the title a few times - basically I'm trying to decide what normal, non-ROW troops choices people are using to best effect in the game - I have 2 tac squads, and they don't often seem to do much, so I'm wanting to see if breachers are worth it, or just an equivalent points of tacs, or likewise with assault or despoiler squads!  Or a mix of all!

Tacts can be better or worse depending on if the game you play uses objectives and you brought an Apoth. Suddenly that fire support becomes a big 'ole tarpit.

My typical experience is I dump the unit midfield usually on an objective, get 1 turn of shooting, get charged and the unit slugs it out until I rescue it with another unit

This is exactly what happened when I ran 3 x 20 man squads. Basic troops are not inspiring but can do a lot in terms of absorbing fire. They would become a pain to deal with if not concentrated on.

As a Salamanders player, I'm wanting to lean towards Breacher Squads at this point, even with Covenant of Fire, and for a few reasons:

1) Leaning into their durability legion trait (it's not great, but it's....something)

2) I've tried running tactical squads with an Apothecary to take advantage of Heart of the Legion, but I am currently dealing with a lot of S8+ attacks from my opponents, so I might as well replace the apothecary for a 5++ save.

3) Tactical Support Squads w/ dragon's breath flamers in covenant of fire can't be put in Compulsory Troops as they don't lose the Support Squad rule, and I don't want to spam Pyroclasts (yet).

4) Most of the targets my current troops have to deal with in the games I play won't be able to hurt/dent them, so I'm currently never benefitting from Fury of the Legion (in case you're wondering, it's dreads, iron circle + praetor, and long ranged units (like artillery, tanks, heavy support squads, etc).

5) I like land raiders, and they can take them as transports.

I like standard Tacs for Imperial Fists and Dark Angels because both Legions can make them pretty nasty.  I've heard Despoiler blobs for Word Bearers with Dark Channeling and a Diabolist is pretty fun, too

The rest of my army tends to be slow as I use a lot of terminator units. I do use a few tactical squads but the assault squads allow me to push forward and threaten early. My first 4pk army was DA specifically for the bikes and speeders of the Ravenwing.  I've never gotten on speed wins battles.
