Wondering if I could turn high marshal of the black templars into a kaldor Draigo conversation?

my current Draigo is the fine crap version with a custodes sword because the original drooped.

but his paint job is 5th edition old now seeing as he was my first

model.

could this work, tips welcome

My perspective on converted special characters is that the wargear should match as best as possible. Draigo has terminator armor. Having said that, if you rocked to the table with a converted HQ and told me that was your counts-as Draigo, I'd be okay with it.

I imagine the conversion would replace the body on the base with a daemon, swap the Templar crosses for GK sword-and-book, etc.

Well it’s a plastic kit right, and I got loads of GK plastic bits left over, shoulder pads. Weapons, even got custodes weapons.

high marshal was released a lot later so slight increase in size. Maybe I use a custodes shied. But ultimately I was after a good body as a starting point, and plastic preferably

So you want to convert this...

That is a very interesting proposition.

  • Some filing will take care of the cross on the left pauldron and the chest (though you can just glue some GK bits over the chest to minimize work). The shoulder pads are separate pieces on the Helbrecht model, however, so you could simply replace them with suitable GK shoulder pads (though you'll lose some of that sculpted cape on the left shoulder pad).
  • A GK tilt shield should replace the white crux.
  • Would you replace Helbrecht's candelabra/iron halo bling?
  • Would you replace the arm/sword with a suitable GK arm/sword? At the very least you'll need to add a storm bolter, whether to the right forearm or as an MIU attachment. IIRC, the only GK models that have storm bolters on their right vambraces are Draigo and Crowe - that's a fairly expensive choice if you're just looking for the storm bolter bit. Of course, you could always do some green stuff casting. It might be far easier (and cost-effective) to just chop a left arm storm bolter off some other GK model.
  • Would you replace Helbrecht's head? Or would you simply convert the existing one? It's a separate bit so you might replace it with a GK Terminator helmet if you want to make the model more immediately identifiable as a GK model.
  • The only bit that might be challenging is if you decide to make the upper torso/head area more closely resemble GK Terminator armour. It could be as simple as using the upper psychic hood cowling from a GK Terminator model.
  • Lore-wise, you'll have to figure out how to get a book (the Liber Daemonica) somewhere. The Draigo model has a large version, but many Grey Knights have it in smaller form, sometimes in a compartment upon their chest. That might be a good way to cover that Templar cross.
  • Would you try to sculpt/paint decorations upon the armour to make it more closely resemble the typical Grey Knight armour (i.e., the engraved words)?

All in all, it's eminently feasible. If you decide to go through with it, please post pictures and/or a tutorial.

Ah, I just realised he’s got a power pack.. doh! I was gonna replace that with a GK one.. but over all it’s pointless now. Terminators don’t have that.

The paraphernalia of shoulders and accessories is easy done. I’ve got a million GK kits.

the candelabra can be replaced by by either a paladin iconography or get a character command flag like he already has.

I quite like helbrechts sword. So I was gonna keep it. Or, there’s a custodes one, in the same pose iirc, and it comes with essentially a storm Bolter as the hilt. So that’s a better reflection, plus it’s a more worthy looking “titan sword”

this was the first model I ever painted, and the model is fine crap.

the sword used to droop, so this year I replaced it with a custodes one as you can see. Plastic ofcourse. It’s the only part of the model I like. I tried to touch up my old paint job, but it’s just bleh.

Having looked at the sprue pics for the High Marshal, I would be cutting a VERY PRECISE hole in the back torso/cape and putting the rear half of a GK Termi torso in there, everything else is covered by BroT.

EDIT: it may also be necessary to smooth the two flat edges where the torso front and rear meet.

May be coming in a little late here, but this is pretty doable. Bro T took care of most of it. I would encourage you to give GS a try and try to sculpt the remainder of the cloak over the left pauldron. Or make a mold of the original. You'll be happy you did. GS has a learning curve, but it's pretty shallow if you use the right tools. :D
