And so begins another army!

I'm currently scurrying to get to a 1k list that will look a little like;

  • Leader
  • 5 terminators
  • Tac marines
  • Assault marines
  • boxnought
  • boxnought

For the leader I'm currently planning with a Legion Champion in mind - Cataphractii plate, Paragon Blade, Thunderhammer, and hate. While he'll probably get retired from a leadership role, after some experimentation with borrowed forces I found him to be horrifically efficient at killing dreadnoughts when thrown in a unit of despoilers. WS6 Thunderhammer with Nightlords outnumbering bonus (hitting on 3s wounding on 2s, Brutal 2) means the unit was typically killing Contemptors for only the loss of 30-40 points of despoilers. A bargain by any measure.

The tacs are done using Mk3 but partially rescaled to match the height of the new Mk6. This was quite a bit of hassle and I'm never doing it again for a unit of 20, especially a unit that's 11 points a model including a bayonet upgrade

Next I've done 20 assault marines, I think I can probably rely on them getting the outnumbering bonus so power lances (or spears for me) looked pretty solid. wounding marines on 2s and hitting at I5 has some charm. The unit will never be particularly strong but it might be decent to embed a character in at some point. I just really wanted a 20 man strong assault squad, however impractical!

Current WIP is a slightly converted boxnought. I think the look will fit the Night Lords.

Being about 7 miniatures away from being able to play this game without using somebody else's army is getting exciting.

Thanks! I'm trying to keep each type of power weapon standardised so that you can tell at a glance what unit has what but I tried doing the thunderhammer in the same style as the spears and it just looked awful.

The Paragon blade is legitimately the best paint job I've ever done, I think. Mediocre compared to a lot of stuff in here but for me it was great.

First boxnought done. Had a bit of a play around with it. Some of it worked.

The 'tattoos' concept works generally - even if the colours are too bright on this one - so that'll be carried forward in the army.

Visually Night Lords are a mess, goofy bat wings and lightning, but on the bright side they aren't supposed to be very uniform so I figure I have a bit of a blank canvas to play with.

The freehand symbol is pretty poor, I completely failed to add depth to the colour so it looks like Fresco Jesus. Still, it was a good learning experience.

The barbed wire freehand looks really cool in person in a vacuum but doesn't belong on this model.

All the freehand came out really well!

I don't think the white is too bright, but they do read as the raven guard markings you see in the dread and parts of corax' armour (and the carcharodons in 40k).

Not so much Corax, I think, but a friend pointed out a similarity to the Carcharodons markings and I can't disagree. Still... I'm not entirely unhappy with that; there's questions about their heritage.

The Carcharodons aren't the Ashen Claws, despite similarities in customs, and the grey skin matches some descriptions of old night lords better than Raven Guard. There's enough ambiguity for me.

Carcharodon markings were an accident, btw, I was thinking it was odd that a Legion full of gang members, crime syndicates, and scummers aplenty didn't have a tattoo culture.

A better picture of the Assault squad after some upgrades. I really need to find a better Curze delivery system but I'm not sure one exists.

And as a followup by current attempt to get back into painting after a few months off, some hammer Indomitus terminators. I know they aren't great in game but they also aren't entirely awful!

Kinda wish I'd know plastics were on the way before I printed the most awkward legs in all of creation.
