HQ Units as Warlords

Hi all, I was noodling around with lists on BattleScribe, and I came across an error it thinks I’ve made. Now, before everyone jumps in, I *know* I shouldn’t rely on BattleScribe for rules, but this is unusual enough for me to double check my thinking.

The issue BattleScribe thinks I have is not having a “compulsory” HQ to be my Warlord.  My only HQ in the list is a unit of  Huscarls, and I think I should be able to designate the Huscarl Master (unit champion) as my Warlord. The main rulebook only says your Warlord should be a Character (not even necessarily an Independent Character), and even suggests ways of getting round it if you don’t have any Characters at all.

Double checking the Huscarl rules from the Exemplary Battles PDF, they can be chosen as a retinue, or as an HQ in their own right. I’m correct in thinking I can take them as my compulsory HQ, and that I can choose the Huscarl Master as my Warlord, right? Or am I missing something?

As I say, I don’t usually pay BattleScribe much mind if it disagrees with me on rules, but this one made me want to double check my thinking. Many thanks!

Battlescribe is wrong.

The character of the huscarls (or other HQ units) becomes the warlord of they're the only viable choice. If there's no HQ character model then you choose any other model.

Battlescribe is very much in progress for 2nd still.

When choosing your army, you must nominate one model to be your Warlord. Unless specified otherwise, this must be a Character model and a HQ choice from the Primary Detachment of the army. In Legiones Astartes armies, Praetors and Centurions make ideal Warlords. If you do not have any appropriate Character models in your army then select any other model in your army to be the Warlord.

Yes, you can choose the Huscarl Master as your Warlord.

This basically! Battlescribe is still really in a beta for HH2.0, maybe not even that, as it's not finished - go by what the BRB says over BS in all cases.

Oh, absolutely. My only concern is that the rulebook isn’t always laid out in the most logical way. As a result, I don’t always trust myself to have tracked down all the relevant rules interactions!

If you’ve got an IOS device, I recommend Quartermaster, I’ve found that it’s much better than Battlescribe.

Thanks for the tip, but I’ve tried QM before, and just didn’t get on with the interface as well. I didn’t find it as intuitive. I’ll give it another go, though!
