So where to start…

I guess it’s good to be back after 5 years (formerly King Kurama just couldn’t access my old account).

Now I’m starting fresh, no paints no brushes no set ups, and I have to begin with what’s changed in the hobby since Forgeworld was in Charge of my favourite game.

I’ve just started ordering the start of a 30K Dark Angels force;

• Praetor

• inner Circle Knight Bois

• 10 x Cat Terminators

• Land Raider

im looking at slowly getting into it again but will be looking at a full custom converted force really making this a character filled force to take down to the LGS and reintegrating myself with the community.

Any recommendations on current paint brands, Brushes, discords inspiration etc would be amazing.

Once I start making a space to Photograph I’ll start a WIP thread and peruse the sub forums, just feels weird to be back and thought I’d start getting used to everything all over again.

any help would by appreciated from the forum.

Whereabouts are you @GhostMalone ?

For brushes, you can't go wrong with Rosemary & Co. Their Series 33 are the same brushes as the Artist Opus S range - fantastic quality sable brushes, and cheap because they're not rebranded. Their dry brushes are also pretty damn good, and they're the same as AO's D range brushes.

For hobby purchases you'll save a little money using independent retailers - you can find a short list here =]

I also wrote guides a while ago on how to start hobbying on the cheap, and how to keep hobbying on the cheap. =D

Legend much appreciate this list; I’m pretty much overwhelmed with the saturation of new brands out there, so much growth in so many years and so much competition to citadel I’m like ohh snap.

im locates I’m South Australia but I was just going to do a mass online purchase need to get a new airbrush compressor all the bells and whistles, I’ve managed to find a few of my old websites but they seem to be limited on available stock of Vallejo so I might branch off into some new paint companies

Personally I'm loving the AK Interactive 3rd Gen range of paints at the minute - nice coverage, thin well, really smooth.

For airbrushes you're better off finding out which manufacturers you can source locally first, and work from there. Availability is almost as important as brand!

Being in AUS you get the short end of the stick I think, but there should be a couple of hobby stores in there for you =]

Holy crap long time no see, it’s amazing seeing people still progressing with the hobby!

I’m currently sussing out some 3D printed bits, but I have tangible progression I’m just getting used to being here again and seeing the formatting people use.

it’s been many a moon since I did this.

Oh damn, Kurama! Welcome back, brother. I had no idea who this was when you commented on my thread and can't wait to see you get back into the hobby.

I have to echo pawl on 3rd Gen AK Interactive paints; they're my new fave and if I had the cash I'd buy the whole set and replace 90% of my existing paints them. They have a super creamy texture, very opaque, and they thin down beautifully.

As for inspiration, as much as I hate to suggest it, Instagram is a great place to find a lot of material to drool over these days.

Hey there, now that's a name (Karuma) I remember, good to see you back.

To rescue your old account, hit Brother Tyler with a PM

done and done, just getting some practice in before I post my brush hand is very very rusty but I’m loving looking around and seeing the forum still active.

Yeah I’ve started doing that and finding some YouTube channels for inspiration, definitely need to get some sculpting tools for this first project and checking out all these 3D bits prints makes the ideas in my head seem more likely to become reality.

For discord and yt, recommendations off the top of my head would be:

Vince Venturella - YT

The dude has a video on everything, and they're all pretty good quality.

The Pickle Jar - YT and Discord

I just like Josh's video style, and his discord server has some of the absolute nicest people in it.

The Race For Terra - YT and discord

If you like weathering effects (or just vehicles) then TRFT is worth a look. Can't remember if the discord is only for subs or not. @Lovecraft0110 runs both. =]

Valbjorn - YT

No new videos for a while (though he's in the process of restarting), but I thought his sculpting tutorials were really rather good.

El Miniaturista - Patreon and discord

I just love this fella's style, and his glow effects are fantastic. The discord is open to all, with extra areas for patrons.

Marco Frisoni (NotJustMecha) - YT

This guy takes a truly artistic approach to his painting, and the results are insane. He can achieve more in four hours than most could in four weeks.

I'd like to give a second shout out to Vince Venturella's channel. One thing I love about his channel is that he takes the techniques up, but breaks it down into some discrete elements, as his classic phrase 'You can stop here.' I've modified down a lot of his videos to really make improvements, even if I don't do a ton. I did some forest bases inspired by his fall forest base video, and with the right ways of doing things, I can crank them out for an army and look amazing compared to a lot of what else I've done.

Both Vince and (possibly to a greater extent) Marco also do their best to explain why things work, and why they're making the choices they make, which I appreciate.

Welcome back brother! I  second Artist Opus.

Get Rosemary and Co series 33. The same brushes as Artist Opus and at a fraction of the price. Rosemary have dry brushing brushes too, again the same as Artist’s

There's links for both above, =]

Ever tried their synthetics? Not sure if it's worth changing to better ones for rough work/metallics etc, or to just keep using whatever I can find cheap.
