Right, this is the apothecary at the moment:

I'm at the point to move onto the next stage and part of that is to try and put more apothecary white into the recesses and parts where the armour overlaps, its still looking very plain.

It's certainly frustrating. Some days I think I'd like to do a whoops all bikes white scars force, but this experience has put paid to that  hats off to everyone who can do white armour!

So another week of little painting time, but finally got to it...only not to paint my figures

My two sons are going to the local  warhammer shop for a mini character battle royal a week on Saturday (no named characters, no more than 6 wounds) and while my oldest can paint well enough himself (a blood angels player) his brother (Dark Angels) not so much. See, he much prefers the building and playing the game parts of the hobby. So what to do with the painting?

That's where I come in:

These are still in the early phases, have to get my skates on to get the Terminator Captain ready in time.

Deathwing update #2

20240322_004620.thumb.jpg.2fcd6a0fe752065ab058c5e4d6f3bff3.jpg

i offered my son the choice of dead nid for his base, and he choose mine. Progress feels very slow and I think my idea of using majority contrast paints is a pain in the behind. Live and learn I guess!

Hmm ... trolling the painter doesn't sound like the most sensible choice

Is this video any help? They've got a few videos up where they used Contrast on power armour, including Deathwing.

That looks right up my street, thanks!

Latest update:

All the base colours are on, its time for clean up before I move to the next step. No way it's finished before Saturday though but it'll be playable.

Dark Angels, for some reason my two sons each choose a ____ Angels army for 40k, not that it's a problem as the three of us have red, green and blue marines sorted

As for the latest update:

20240330_015819.thumb.jpg.6176efe3d1b5da69f072fc74df5b8be7.jpg

the captain was "done" at 2 a.m. Saturday morning, only a few hours before it was needed! It's not finished by any means but my son was happy with it. The tournament was interesting, 12 kids in all and my kids were regrettably knocked out early on (bad dice rolls!) Though the three finialsts were two custodes and a Tau battlesuit...showing that all characters weren't made equal (I think the Tau won) fun was still had though.

I'll press on and finish the terminators and then I can get back to my Ultramarines

They got a chocolate egg out of it  I wish the store did more events like it really. When I was a kid, there was always something on. I think they'd love a doubles tournament.

Deathwing Terminators are finished:

and I've learned a lot from these, some good and some bad.

Here's their teleport homer:

I also went back to the Terminator Captain to play with his cloak:

I really like painting cloaks

Of course, getting these done has meant I could go back to my boys in blue:

These four have had all their washes done, if it wasn't for the fact it was pushing 1:30 a.m. by the time I done these four, I may have gotten the rest done but that'll be tonight's job.

Missed my self imposed deadline again

Been in a funk recently but managed to rouse myself out of it enough to get everyone to the next stage:

the blue has been re-layered again meaning it's time for the highlights and then, they're all done.

Hoping the last batch of figures from the Leviathan box go faster than these ones!

Looking great! Good depth on the blue, which is important.

Thanks! That's what I'm aiming for. It's taken me some time to get right. Good thing I've got more blue boys to practice on!

It has been way too long since I updated this thread...

So what have I been doing?

These guys:

and this guy:

Really need to get them finished as not only are the last five Infernus Marines standing between me and a completed Leviathan box, but this knightly gentleman..

no idea why the picture is turning sideways, but yeah, best part is, I've got two of these to paint as my younger son got one as well...and a whole host of Dark Angel goodies. Going to be a busy year.

rotated image :)

Managed to get some daytime painting in and got the Sternguard Veterans shaded.

next up for these guys will be  relayering, i can forsee the white being a pain

However, I managed to get the Phobos Lieutenant with combi weapon to completion (painting side anyways, transfers can be done whenever)...or so I thought

only when I was taking this photo did i realise that I'd forgotten to highlight the knife he was pointing with! That and the base rim.... looks like I'll have to fix that when the Sternguard get to that point!

I agree, good progress! I'm also looking forward to seeing some work on the Lion.

The tertiary colours on the base of the LT work very well; the green and blue of the Tyranid remains are very fresh-looking that make the base 'pop' (as they say) a bit more but are not distracting. Cool decision!

How do you paint the blue armour? Do you apply was to a blue base? Regardless, I like the shading. One critique: you missed the mould line on the left leg of the rightmost Sternguard.

Yeah I don't do well with mould lines  I am trying to get better with it but o always make the fatal mistake of saying "hmm I'm sure paint will hide that!". Paint can hide a lot of things, but not that.

The nid colours are those of my custom Hive Fleet Boreidas. It was a bit of Serendipity on my part that the colours worked well compared to my Ultramarines.

As for my blue, it's several coats of macragge blue over a black basecoat followed by a black wash. I then go back and relayer the blue (treating it like a glaze if i get the consistency correct) over the top. Then I highlight with calgar blue but I'm still struggling to get the highlights how I want them, in some cases they're too thick initially so I have to go back to thin them. In others I haven't thinned them right so they come off more harsh then I want.

Still learning!

With regards to the Lion, I'm both dreading and anticipating working on him. I'm still trying to decide what colour scheme I'm going with.

Haha, yeah - paint hiding things has its limits, regrettably ;) I also sometimes push my luck like that.

Regarding the blues: there are quite a few steps but it shows in the quality/depth of the colour. I think that once you get a better hang of highlighting, you'll hit a sweet spot. The standard to which you're painting already is great.
