Thanks for the comments guys!

It's an exciting time to be a Tyranid fan, but before I get stuck in with the new stuff I had to take a look back in time, got myself a 4tj edition broodlord off eBay and gave it a little love.

I've tried adding a little yellow detailing to this guy, which I love so I'll have to go back and add it to some of my others.

Its a great model... iv a few lol. Even made one into a lictor typre for when they could take feeder tendrils.

I like the yellow. Would also give you a cool direction on a lictor to near blend with your bases...

Whats next?

Thanks guys, I remember everyone hating this model when it first came out, but now it turns out they all loved it all along! Weird, but glad I'm not the only one.

As for what's next, I've got a few plans.

The neurotyrant has a fully sculpted body under all that umbrella carapaced weirdnes, so I've turned mine into a big mean Zoanthrope! Just a little tidying up to do on him;

Then I realised the parasite of mortrex body is roughly the same size, so I made him a friend using a spare Zoanthrope head.

What a handsome couple! They just need a bit of greenstuff to tidy up rough joins before they're ready to paint.

I'm planning to turn a screamer killer into a big beefy Old One Eye, so that'll be coming soon

Amazing... may need several of him... what you thinking with the rest of the headpiece?

And for sure on the broodlord he wasnt very liked. I was hoping at the time that stealers were going to be reworked into a more similar style but alas still waiting...

What a great idea! I noticed all the detail on the Neurotyrant as well, seemed a waste with the armour covering it.

Looking forward to seeing your old one eye conversion. I'm hoping he gets a new bespoke model myself.

@Brother nathan do you mean the big sort of halo head crest thingy? No immediate plans for it yet, but it's a good thing to have in the bits box!

And I'm hoping for reworked genestealers with the range refresh later this year, but they say hope is the first step on the road to disappointment...

@ZeroWolfI think I'm just old fashioned and don't really get the neurotyrant, so as soon as I realised it can basically just be a Zoanthrope that made a lot more sense to me!

I've made a start on Old One Eye's head, based off the Harpy head, with the mouth closed and a new armour plate sculpted. Obviously still a lot to do here. But I like where he's headed.

Based fairly closely off the original 3rd edition model, just updated to suit the more modern style. He still needs a rhino horn, mandibles and the rest of his armour plates! Oh and I need to figure out how to attach it to the body and work on that...

Made a bit more progress on old one eye, having a lot of fun here!

So first off I sculpted some gross squishies on his back and finished off his head;

And now I've made a start on his back carapace. I've widened the shoulder pads to better match the original, still a lot of work to do to finish that off but he's definitely coming together now.

Let me know what you think!

Have also had a thought based on your above conversions... prime and neurotyrant... recon combining the two you could make a really cool looking parasite?  Warrior wings on neuro body and a different head? Meanwhile... would a close the old walking zoan using the leftovers be possible...? Thoughts and any other genral thoughts of possible conversions using leviathan?

Thanks everyone!

@Pearson73cheers, I've never felt like any official Zoanthrope model is creepy enough for a floating psychic brain monster with atrophied body, glad the creepiness is coming across in mine!

@Brother nathan I usually use a mix of Greenstuff with Aves Apoxie Sculpt, though sometimes I'm too lazy and just use neat Apoxie Sculpt which is why you're seeing different colours!

Re. Your parasite idea, sounds pretty cool but I'm generally not a fan of the new Prime wings! I've got some vargheist wings which I'm planning to Nid up so that could be an option? The Parasite's head is still sat on my desk waiting for a use...

I've spent tonight working on Old One Eye's ruined shoulder, trying to give the impression of layers - there's a soft fleshy layer under the armour and a bone/keratin core. Hopefully that comes across here!

Taken a break from sculpting to get my Neurotyrant/Zoanthrope conversion painted. Really pleased with this guy, though painting the brain was a bit of a challenge!

Thanks for the comments everyone! Glad the brain bug has gone down well, he was one of my simplest conversions but just felt right somehow!

Now for a less simple conversion, here's the current state of play for Old One Eye;

And just for giggles, here he is next to a 3rd edition metal carnifex- hopefully you can see how I've tried to recreate certain details and themes from the original!

Compress_20230713_090130_0528.thumb.jpg.3e459478a8ecd6f4a885ede960825cda.jpg

still on the to-do list;

*I might sculpt another layer of chitin just to beef up and add some detail to those old metal claws.

*Squishy joint tissue in various places

*Barnacles!

*I might elongate the scything talon arms a little.

*Then it's just tidying everything up and making a suitable base for him!

Also for anyone interested, I posted a video tutorial to Instagram yesterday explaining how I sculpt Tyranid armour plates / carapace. Don't know if I can link to it here, but it's under the same user name so should be easy enough to find.

Looks great - I was thinking of doing exactly this when I was assembling my Neurotyrant, minus the zoan face - glad to see how good it looks - 100% will do if I get my hands on a second set of nids.

I was thinking of the Screamer to OOE conversion also, though I have a pair of tervigon claws saved up for it!

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks all for the comments!

@ZeroWolfthose old claws have been rattling around in my bits box for nearly 20 years, I had to use them here!

@Xenith I look forward to seeing your take on OOE and the neurotyrant!

Sorry I haven't updated for a while, Old One Eye took some time to paint! But he's finally done, I tried combining elements of the original OOE scheme from the 3rd edition codex with my usual shceme, I think it came out pretty well! Without further ado...

And a couple of close-ups of his face;
