A friend of mine told me you can run most Horus heresy models in 40k using the 'relic' rule. Since alpha legion only has unique models in 30k being able to legitimately field some variety like headhunters and lernaens would be nice. Is this correct? And what rule books do you need to do this?

Most Horus Heresy vehicles have stats in the Imperial Armour Compendium* and can be used at the cost of 1 CP. The basic infantry can be run as tactical squads/veterans/assault squads/devastators or their traitor equivalent as appropriate, and the plastic terminators fall under the "relic terminators" dataslate for loyalists, while chaos space marines can probably just use their regular terminator dataslate. With legion specific models, however, you kind of have to decide what the closest equivalent 40k unit is**. Certain pieces of tech like man portable volkite weapons and sky hunter jet bikes are also lost technologies that don't have 40k rules.

*Or a pdf on Warhammer Community's downloads page in the case of the Kratos since it's new.

** E.G. If I want to run some Dark Angels Knights Cenobium in 40k, I'll need to work out with my community if they're regular Deathwing terminators, Relic Terminators, or if their heavy Cataphractii armor and fancy greatswords can count as the wargear of a Deathwing Knight.

Edit: It doesn't look like there's a good match in the CSM codex for Headhunters, and Lerneans would end up just being regular terminators with funny looking combi-bolters.

As far as i know they need a 40K datasheet. These would be available for download via warhammer’s site, or via forgeworld for fw products through the imperial armour books for 9th. This tends to be for the vehicles/dreadnaughts, but may include infantry as well.

Otherwise, they would just be proxies for existing units in the codex, so could tool up some mark III infantry as an example to proxy for pretty much any sm or csm squad, just need the right weapons

As grotsmasha said. Just call counts as. My blood angels are converted so much they don’t exactly fit either game, and I just say, “jump pack guys are assault squads” or “fancy dudes with big guns are plasma devastators”

Chaos Space Marines get the short end of the stick there, though, since they have far fewer units to use as a base. Alpha Legion headhunters would make great Sternguard, but boltgun chosen are just kinda sad.

You can definitely run some models from the 30k range.

It's not all of them, and the models that do or do not have rules often feel random.

Hopefully the 10th edition FW rules will clarify it for everyone as they should be easily accessible and free.

Or better yet, we just roll the 30k loadouts into the actual codexes themselves for general units like the contemptors, preads etc. Heck, even roll the Scorpius as an upgrade to the whirlwind unit entry even.
